Please help - dentist appointment in an hour and terrified?!

Question: Please help - dentist appointment in an hour and terrified!?
It's only for a check up and I've no idea where my phobia came from, I've never had any traumatic experiences or anything, this will be the third time I've been for a 6 month check up with this dentist after a gap of 10 years not seeing one!. But I've just been physically sick with anxiety, my insides feel like they've turned to water and I'm shaking so much I can barely type!. How can I reduce my anxiety in the next hour before the appointment rather than let it build up even more!? PLEASE help, I'm desperate, I know it's stupid but I can't help it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

TRY to remind yourself that today is only a "look-see" and there will be no loud noises or sharp objects involved!

Bring some dark sunglasses and your ipod or walkman, and imagine yourself somewhere you'd rather be (ok, anywhere else but the dentist, I know - but picture a lovely beach or lake - whatever your deal is)

May be too late for this - but no coffee or other stimulants - will only make you more jittery!. Try to eat something, even if it's just a bit of toast, and drink some juice to keep your blood sugar stable - you'll feel better!.

After the check-up, if you find you need treatment, speak to your dentist about your concerns!. You are definately not alone in being a bit nervous in the chair - more people are than not, and they certainly won't think any less of you for it!. Ask if you can be sedated for any treatment you might need!. Either the dentist will phone in a prescription for valium, or administer something similar to you when you return for the work!. This way you are nice and relaxed and will likely snooze through the procedure and wake up later with your work complete!.

I work for an endodontist (the ever popular root canal doctor) and I can tell you that we only see MAYBE one person a week who isn't absolutely terrified (unless they have been to see us before and like us) and we sedate about 60% of them!. It's easier for you, easier for us - everyone is happy!.

Good luck! I'm off to my clinic to greet my first rather-not-be there patient of the day!Www@Answer-Health@Com

watch something on tv to take your mind off it, or answer a few more questions here!.

But something that gets me through something is to think that tomorrow it will be all done and dealt with!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

See if they do nitrous oxide!. Good luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have a really nice dentist, and when I went there the first time (like you after not going in forever!) I just outright told him, I hate dentists, and scared of all the things that go on, and it makes me not want to come!.!.!.
and he was so nice about it! They get it all the time, and if you just outright tell him then they will try and make it easier for you!. Mine explains everything that he is doing, and says for how long each thing will take, and stops during it to ask me if I am ok!.!.!.and with all that going on it makes it seem less scary!. Helps too that they have a TV in the ceiling and they give you the conrtol to change channels so takes your mind off it for a bit!.!.!.!.

They see people all day who are the same as you, and everyone makes it through, so try and stay calm and before you know it you will be back at home, relaxing!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Take a deep breath and relax first off!.
No one likes going to the dentist but it is necessary for great teeth!. The dentist will just do a check up today and write down things wrong with your teeth!. Then the next visit the work will be done!. Most dentists if they know you are nervous give you lagughing gas(noxious oxide) to calm you down!. Relax, I absolutely love my dentist they are very gentle and caring but I have had some dentists that don't care!. I'm sure your dentist is great! 20 years from now you'll be glad you went to the dentist to get your teeth fixed!
Best of Luck and don't worry!
