To polish? Or not to polish?!

Question: To polish!? Or not to polish!?
That is the question!. I went in to the dentist for my 6 month cleaning this morning and for the first time in my life they asked me if I would like to have my teeth polished or not!. Apparently my dentist has recently decided NOT to automatically polish after every single cleaning because the polish is an abrasive!. The hygenist said that it was mostly to remove stains and since the cleaning removed the staining that was on my teeth they didn't really need polishing unless I wanted it!. I always thought that polishing was done to "buff out" the small scratches left on the enamel by the scaling in addition to removing staining!.

So what are the benefits of polishing!? I understand that the polish is an abrasive!.!.!.but so is toothpaste!. So how much more abrasive is prophy paste vs regular toothpaste!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

It should be noted that polishing is still considered the "norm" in most dental offices!. I highly doubt your dentist is trying to save a few pennies (as a reason to not polish teeth!.) More likely: He/She believes that it has no therapeutic value, and in fact, over time damages healthy teeth!.

Best of luck in your search!. I hope you find this answer useful!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Well you dont have to have your teeth polished!. The dentist is proably trying to but back on the cost of the paste, and it isnt totally necessary anyway!. It is more abrasive than toothpaste and can remove a few darker stains better, but you dont actually need itWww@Answer-Health@Com
