Answers:
I just had four of mine removed in December, two of which were impacted!. The best advice will come from your doctor, but as someone who had a rough recovery (and didn't need to), here's what I learned:

-find out what pain medicine they will prescribe you!. Milk products don't mix with some of them and it's easier to stock up on your post surgery foods knowing this (I didn't take any medication for pain so I'm not sure which one it is)

-you may want some extra gauze; I took awhile to clot and having extra around was helpful!. Also, changing the gauze was probably the most painful part!. As long as you know this though, it won't be too bad!.

-Exercise your jaw! I accidentally didn't open and close my mouth enough and wound up with trismus (lock jaw), which was annoying and unnecessary!. Just open your mouth wide (like a yawn) fairly often and you'll completely avoid that!.

-don't use a straw! In general, be gentle drinking and rinsing when you brush your teeth because you don't want a dry socket!.

-Be sure to take the antibiotics they prescribe! If you have trouble with medicines (ie: stomach upset), get a pro-biotic like Fluorostor to take before the antibiotic!. I discovered this too late and wound up with an ear infection because I wasn't doing well with the antibiotic!.

Most of my troubles came from my ear infection!.!.!. if I hadn't gotten that, I would have had a super easy recovery! I actually was out and about the evening I had my surgery and was back at work the following day!. It honestly isn't as bad as people make it out to be and you only have to do it once in your life, which is a nice thing to remind yourself! Take your antibiotics and it should be smooth sailing! You'll feel fine in a couple of days :-)Www@Answer-Health@Com

Prior to the surgery, lay in a big supply of freezer pops and non-citrus juices, jello, broth based soups, noodles, and a couple bags of frozen peas!. You won't be eating the peas, you will best use those to apply ice to your face to help with the swelling- and little frozen peas conform to facial curves a lot easier than anything else!. You can buy the cheapest sort out there, and you will want two bags at least- one to use, one to spare!. Afterwards, you can eat them or just keep them for other injuries!. You also want a toddler size toothbrush, as you need to brush but won't want to open wide or hit the removal sites!. It's a good idea to get a couple of your favorite movies so you aren't too bored while you are stuck at home those first few days either!. You may as well not get stuff like ice cream, because dairy products will make the saliva feel thick, and you will then want to gag or barf!. You can have soda, but only if you let it go flat!. You might also like a heating pad, to use after the second day if there is much swelling!. You will use ice the first 24 hours or so to limit the swelling, but after that you need heat for the healing and to carry off any extra fluid!. And it might be a good idea to have a few teabags around as well!. About day 3 your jaw and the sites may be a bit stiff and sore!. A nice hot cup of tea pooled in the cheek pocket will help soothe that for you!. The teabag itself can be useful if you start to develop a dry socket, chomping down on a warm teabag helps until you can get back to the dentist!. Depending on how the removal goes, you may have no swelling or a lot- there's no way to predict how your face will take to all of it either!. Most swelling will go away after about 5 days, and the cold and heat will help most!. You will be on a diet of soft stuff for at least a week!. When you first get things to chew, stay away from things that have "bits"- like fried rice and such, which will just get stuck!. Be sure to rinse your mouth after eating!. You can either swallow or spit it out after the swish, just don't spit with much force for the first few days!. And you will want to sleep somewhat propped up for the first few days as well!. Gravity helps with the swelling and reduces the pounding sensation you sometimes get in the area, plus you won't feel like you are choking on stuff!. With some luck, it's a day or two of real misery, and by the end of the first week you are human again!. I suggest you avoid spicy foods, dairy products and citrus the first week as they don't feel too good on irritable tissues!. And of course, follow all the directions your dentist or surgeon gives you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

If being sedated, hydrate well before you stop drinking and dress comfortably in layers!. Wear sensible shoes, flip flops and sedation are not a good combination!. Use gentle pressure to hold gauze in for one hour periods of time after procedure, change 3 or 4 times!. This is important for forming good blood clots and preventing dry sockets!. Use ice 20 min!. at a time frequently (10-15x/day) first 48-72 hours!. Wait about 20 minutes between icings!. Pin a small towel or use tube socks to hold ice in place!. Have liquids only first 24 hrs!. Do not brush or rinse first day!. No straw or smoking for at least 24 hrs!. Sucking action can dislodge clot and cause a dry socket-painful!. Warm salt water rinses after meals and at bedtime starting next day!. 2nd day start soft foods!. Nothing rough or crunchy that has poking potential for two weeks (peanuts, popcorn, potato chips, hard candy)!. Small pieces of sharp foods can cause infection!. Everyone is different with their recovery-depends on size of mouth, length of roots, age, etc!., plus how well they follow instructions!. Do not take prescription pain medicine on an empty stomach-can nauseate!. Anti-inflammatory medicines are also helpful (ibuprofen)!. Stay home and rest!. Take antibiotics as ordered and finish entire prescription!. If you are female and take birth control pills, be aware than antibiotics can inactivate the pill and you could get pregnant!. Use a barrier form of birth control for the entire pill pack that you are on the antibiotic!. If antibiotic goes in to the first day of the pill pack, you need to use a barrier method for the entire rest of the pill pack!. Good Luck!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

dont forget to get something to eat atleast two days before the big day!.!.or whatever time, you are scheduled to get it done!. follow your dentist advice and have handy warm salt water to gargle and help soothe the gums!. it will help with the healingWww@Answer-Health@Com

Stay calm, take deep breaths!. Keep your mouth in tip-top shape afterwards, and don't eat hard foods for 1-3 weeks after!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
