I have quit smoking for 4 months and I'm finding my gums are bleeding a lot !

Question: I have quit smoking for 4 months and I'm finding my gums are bleeding a lot is this normal!?
I have always had excellent dental hygeine and oral health so it's very worrying that since I made a move to improve my health I have developed this problem!. It only happens just after I have eaten and stops after a good floss and brush!. Any ideas!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

I'm a dentist!. This is quite common!.

When you smoke the blood supply to your gums is less than if you don't, so you are less likely to experience the bleeding gums associated with gingivitis (which is caused by not brushing/ flossing thoroughly enough)!.

When you stop smoking the blood flow gradually returns to normal, so they bleed more!. The best thing to do is keep your teeth as clean as possible (although I'm sure you are brushing) with floss or interdental brushes as well as toothbrushes, and the bleeding will reduce again!.

i recommend brushing your gums while you are brushing your teeth this will increase the circulation within your gums and will help in transporting healthy blood to your gums ,but i have to tell u that u'll bleed from your gums while you are doing this but don't give it much care the bleeding will stop automatically nearly after 1 week of doing this regimen PLUS taking a pill (only one) of vitamin c daily!.!.!.u'll see the result within 1 week!.!.!.!.thanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

I know this sounds silly but when u quit did you start to brush teeth harder some people also brush more frequent when quiting this may have upset your gums have a little think has your brushing routine changed in anyway if so go back to how you used to brush if not follow answer no 2 it could be something and nothing good luck x
and well done on quiting Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hi, I quit smoking five yrs ago and had the same problem, I think it has to do with the nicotine suddenly out of your system!. I would recommend having a lot of vitamine C, since it will make your gums stronger!. if it does not stop within 5 days or so, go see a doctor
best of luck

This doesnt sound normal, i recommend you consult your gp immediately and tell him he problems!. Im sure its nothing to worry about but just to be on the safe side id check with the doctor!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I am sure this is nothing to do with stopping smoking, well done by the way!

It does sound like gingivitis, I would pop along and have a chat to your dental hygienist/dentist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
