i need to do a project for school and they ask m to put how much math is involved in that career and i chose the career in dentistry but i don't know how to answer that question!.!.!.!.!.!. PLEASE help i need the answer for monday!.!.!.!. and thank you!Www@Answer-Health@Com

there is alot of perceptual (spacial) abilities you have to use as a dentist!. This is what geometry is all about!. Using shapes and flipping things around in your head is the same thing dentists do with teeth!. Having to use a mirror and work on a tooth upside down requires alot of geometry (kind of like the angles in a game of pool)!. You have to make sure you are drilling with the long axis of the tooth and measure the root lengths of the tooth!. I would say the main thing is geometry!. You also have to be able to number the teeth and be good at finances when you own your own business!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

1!. Well, of course, we do 'count' teeth !!

2!. We also use 'geometric shapes', 'planes' and 'angles' to prepare teeth!.

However, there are other things that require math :

3!. We have to determine approximately how many minutes will be required to perform a procedure!. That requires 'addition' of the time required for each step!. Each patient is then given an appointment for certain length of time!.

4!. In the case of doing fillings, we have to determine how many teeth need to be restored!. The cavities also vary in size depending on the number of surfaces of each tooth involved!. The more the surfaces, the bigger the cavity, and the more material will be needed!. That in turn, will mean more cost and higher fees!. So, you see this is an example of series of 'proportions' used!. You can express it in 'ratio'!.

5!. Based on that we determine how many appointments the patient will require to complete the entire treatment!. That involves 'division'!.

6!. The scheduling of all of the patients for a given chair unit for each day is done by 'adding' the length of appointment for each patient !.

7!. Then again 'multiplication' is done by the total number of chairs available in the practice to get the total number of patients to be scheduled for each day!. This calculation is done every work day for the whole year!.

8!. A 'total' number of hours worked by each employee is maintained!. That helps in paying the salary of the employees!. Payment for overtime, sick time and vacation time!.!.!.!.all involve 'adding' up the number of hours and 'multiplying' with the hourly rate to come up with the salary to be paid!.

9!. In order to set a fee for a procedure, the dentist has to take into consideration the following :

a) Cost of purchase of the material

b) Laboratory fee incurred

c) Overhead cost (part of which is the employees' salary with benefits, and the mortgage / loan!. However, there is also the cost for maintaining the inventory!. Malpractice insurance is also very expensive)!.

d) Insurance coverage for individual patient (which varies by insurance policies)

e) Therefore, each patient may have different co-payment!.

f) The desired profit margin!.

The fee "F" will be the 'sum' of all of the above mentioned points!.

The cavity preparation for fillings and the preparation of teeth for crowns and bridges require certain measurements (e!.g!., you have to know the crown to root 'ratio' of a tooth, you have to have a minimum thickness / width / height of certain preparations, which is measured mostly in millimeters!. So, here we use 'measurement in different dimensions' and 'units'!.) In terms of the ratio, if a restoration that has greater height is placed on a tooth which has very little bone support (in other words, has a shrot root or very little amount of root buried into the bone), too much load and lateral displacement occurs and the whole things fails!. This can be compared to a beam which is not placed into the ground deep enough and then you start to climb up on it!. It will undergo lateral displacement and bend over!.

11!. Preparing a tooth also involves certain amount of 'reduction' (we have to trim the tooth down, i!.e!., involves 'subtraction') that we HAVE to do to provide room for optimum 'thickness' (in millimeters) of the metal and porcelain for the crown!. Otherwise, the prorcelain can fracture!.

12!. For Root Canal Treatment we use special instruments and then place it along the scale to measure the 'length' of the canals!. The treatment can fail if that measurement is not done right!.

13!. The severity of Periodontal Disease / "gum" disease is measured by probing the "Pocket Depth", which is nothing but the 'distance' from the gum margin to the bone (again, in millimeters)!.

14!. For Implant placement again the height, and width of the bone is measured in millimeters!. This is important because the implant CANNOT get integrated well into the jaw bone without good amount of bone around it!. The 'distance' between the remaining teeth is another factor that determines the 'diameter' chosen for the missing tooth to be replaced in between!.

15!. Proper 'Angulation' of the teeth is very important in Dentistry!. We call it restoring the "Facial Profile"!. If we overdo it that makes the teeth protrude (stick out)!. This is crucial while making a bridge in the front of the mouth or fabricating a complete denture!. Careless approach messes up the profile completely!.

16!. Among other things :

a) The dentists have to calculate the student loan and the repayment installments every month !

b) Mortgage and the loan taken against the practice adds to the Mathematical challenge !!

c) At the end of all this ordeal, there is no forgetting of calculating the profit !!!

17!. By the way, when a dentist starts out as an associate working for another dentist, they get paid a certain 'percentage' of their production (the value of the work done) or collection (the money that has been recovered / collected)!.

Therefore, like any other profession, Dentistry is also a business!. A dentist who does not know how to understand these basic concepts can never be successful no matter how good a dentist he / she is!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well first off money!.!.!.!. procedures cost money!.!.!. some of the money comes from insurance and some comes out of the patients pocket!. also you have to know how much you plan on spending for your practice each month in supplies and bills and how much you will be making and how many of each procedure you will have to perform per month to make your quota and make profit!.!.!.!. thats just a start!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

every job uses math to some extend!. for instance dentists can prescribe and use narcs alot of times on their patients so they have to calculate the doses!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
