Getting into dental school?!

Question: Getting into dental school!?
Would I have a greater chance of being accepted into a dental school if my undergrad was pre-dentistry at a small college in NY, or general health profession at UFlorida!?

Answers:
I'm a dentist!.

Most dental schools have certain admissions requirements:

1 year general chemistry
1 year organic chemistry
1 year physics
1 year biology

These courses are required by all schools!. Some schools, unfortunately, have other requirements, such as a year of math, or perhaps a statistics course!. Some schools require that you take biochemistry as an undergrad!. Either way, the number of pre-requisite courses are fairly small compared to the total number of courses you will take to earn your college degree!.

In addition to the pre-requisite courses I mentioned above, all dental schools require the DAT!.

So, as you can see, admissions requirements for dental school (which are almost identical to those of medical school, with the DAT vs!. the MCAT being the notable exception) are relatively few!.

The significance of this!? Well, you can major in whatever you want in college!. I was a biology major, however, one of my classmates was a government major!.

Basically, dental schools will look closely at a few things:

1!. Your overall GPA
2!. Your science and pre-requisite GPA
3!. Your DAT scores
4!. Your exposure to dentistry (which they views as an indicator of the sincerity of your interest in dentistry)
5!. Extracurricular activities
6!. Your undergraduate institution

Keep in mind that GPA and DAT scores are far and away the most important factors--with GPA being (to my knowledge) somewhat more important than the DAT!.

So basically, schools don't care whether you're a biology major or a art major!. What they want to know is whether or not you can hack it in dental school!.

With regard to your situation, I don't think it's a matter of what you study, rather, where you study!. University of Florida is a very strong undergraduate institution!. Moreover, as a Florida resident, you may have a much better chance of getting into their dental school!. I don't know for sure, however!.

Now, keep in mind: I am a dentist!. I do not work for a dental school, much less serve on an admissions committee!. Hence, if you want to know what will give you the best chance of admission, I'd contact some of the schools to which you intend on applying!. Generally, most admissions deans are friendly people who are very willing to offer advice!.

One other point: dental school is an absolutely miserable four years!. You'd better be damn sure it's what you want!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Probably the same!. You might broaden your outlook more at UF, maybe even branch off into a different specialization!. You wouldn't have much chance to do that in NY!. So it all depends how absolutely sure you are about being a dentist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
