Is it possible for my old capped root canal to be decaying?!

Question: Is it possible for my old capped root canal to be decaying!?
I had a root canal done about 9 years ago and it was very painful, and I think that they hurried and finished (it was a 4 visit long event), capped the tooth and was done with it before they actually were "done" with it because I still felt pain when they were capping it!. They stated it was due to the root canal, not the roots not being fully cleared out!. Anyways, lately, I've been having headaches on that side of my head, throbbing pain by the cap sporadically and in the tooth, and bad breath!. Can this be a possibility!? Can this tooth really not have been fully cleared out and is causing all this distress!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
Many possibilities there!. A common misconception is that once a tooth is capped (crowned) that you cannot get decay!. You can - underneath the crown - especially if you are not a diligent home care person!. If you are not brushing and flossing (or otherwise cleaning between your teeth) you can have decay and/or periodontal disease!. That said - you could have a fractured root (not necessarily the fault of the dentist's root canal therapy!. And there is always the possibility that the root canal therapy could be failing - it happens sometimes - often for unknown reasons!. The fact that you mention bad breathe tell me that it is more likely decay or perio disease!. Get an appointment with your DDS and if you are not comfortable with him/her - seek a new practitioner!.

It's very likely that this tooth is the culprit!. I had one go bad after 6 years, the tooth had cracked, causing the pain!. I had to have it removed and I got an implant!. If the initial job wasn't done right, you would have been in pain within 2 months!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You got it!. Likely infection and bacterial activity!.

The following will answer your question partly as to why the rest of the root canal treated tooth gets decayed :

http://answers!.yahoo!.com/question/index;!.!.!.

To make it worse a root canal treated tooth can also get infected many years down the road!. That can happen due to :

a) Flare up of an infection from the remnants of organisms left inside the canal!. This is hard to predict!.

b) From repeated trauma to the tooth!. That can happen due to grinding habit!.

The best thing will be to get evaluated by your dentist, get new x-rays taken and seek definitive care!.

NOTE :

On rare occasions, a root canal treated tooth can get fractured underneath the cap (crown)!.

The tooth may not remain restorable if the fracture is deep enough to reach the root(s)!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
