My retainer really sucks?!

Question: My retainer really sucks!?
I just got my braces off yesterday :D and then I got my retainer!. While I'm extremely happy with how my teeth look, I don't like my retainer at all!. I'm constantly slurping the saliva trapped between it and the roof of my mouth, and my S's and J's are really slurred!. How long will it take for all this to go away!? Is it just a matter of your body stopping producing saliva in that part of your mouth and getting used to having your tongue not hitting the roof of your mouth as high!? And is there anything I can do to speed up the getting used to talking normally!? Because I'm going to the fair tonight with a bunch of girls and I kind of don't want to sound like a retard!. I know I'm getting a little better already, but still!. Finally, what is the best way to keep the retainer smelling good throughout the day!? I know there's those Retainer-Brite tablets that work great, but my goody bag thing that came from the orthodontist only came with like 2 of them and from what I understand each of them only lasts you a day or so!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have retainers too and the first week with them is hard because your mouth isnt used to them!. if you are constantly wearing the as your orthodontist told you to, then the discomfot will go away in a week!. remember when you first got your braces!?!? that was a wierd feeling because you wern't used to it!. so it'll go away! but if you still cant live with them, ask your orhodontist about clear retainers!. I have these clear ones that are almost like invisaligns!. they are alot better because you cant see the and they dont get up in the back of your throat!. and i use POLI-DENT!. its like three bucks for a case of 100 tablets!. you put them in a cup of warm water and put your retainers in for three minutes every day and then they smell minty and it takes the food off of them!. good luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had the same problem!. Grats on getting your braces off btw!. But honestly it takes a little bit of practice!. You need about a month or two of having the braces on permanently, only taking them off for eating!. After about a month or two you only need it for sleeping, so if your having trouble now it wont be as bad as you think :)!. Just lol "bite the bullet" at the moment and things will be back to normal shortly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had that same problem with my retainer!. The lisp thing will go away, but i understand your frustration!. As far as the saliva thing, I'm not sure what to tell you, except maybe your body will adapt and stop treating the retainer like a foreign object!.

I switched to the clear retainers when my dog ate my old ones (yeah, that happened)!. Those seemed a lot better!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

How bad will having your teeth get crooked again suck as compared to the retainer sucking!? The crooked teeth are forever!.!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I went throught this twice!. It will last about three days but if you want to speed it up, never take your retainer out to talk, read book sout loud, and just talk a lotWww@Answer-Health@Com

At first the thought of a retainer was hell to me!. I also went through the saliva problems and the slurred speech!. After time, maybe 2 weeks, i started to talk normally again and somehow the saliva problem went away!. I think subconsciously you learn how to deal with the saliva!. To keep it smelling good, I put my retainer in a cup of mouth wash while i brush my teeth!. And as for tonite, with the ladies, just dont wear it!. A couple hours without wearing it will not be bad!.

Hope this helps, and good luck tonite ; ) Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hey! I used to wear a retainer and it does take a couple of weeks to adjust!. Hang in there and practice saying words that have the S's and J sounds in them!. It does help! I had to wear mine for 8 months and decided in the last 4 of them not to, well I really regret doing that because one of my teeth started to turn and is slightly off than the rest!. Be diligent about wearing it and in a few months you will most likely be able to get rid of it for good! You will have a picture perfect smile :) Hang in there!Www@Answer-Health@Com
