I was at the dentist and this worried me...?!

Question: I was at the dentist and this worried me!.!.!.!?
When I was in the chair and they were getting the little vacuum thing ready to put in my mouth, they were like "Hmm it appears to be blocked" and pulled out this blood-covered piece of cotton (I guess from the previous patient)!. Then without washing it or anything they used it on me!.

Is this hygenic!? Dentists or people in the dental industry only please, I know random people will just say "Eww gross" etc!. I know it's gross!. What I want to know is, is it proper procedure to do that!?Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
As you said the little vacuum thing (saliva ejector tip) is sucking up all liquid in the patient's mouth!. Saliva ejector tip are mostly disposable specially if it is made of plastic tube!. To get a blockage out of that system they will start on the first filtering part after the removable disposable saliva ejector tube!. Which means they have to disconnect the tip that touches your mouth to take out any blockage!. This might have escape your sight, when you got distracted with the blood covered piece of coton!.
Cleanliness and sterility are essential with dental jobs!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You do not have to be a dentist or in the dental industry to know that isn't only NOT "proper procedure", but is RISKY procedure!. That you would even question it, or allow that "little vacuum thing" to be put in your mouth tells me you have a lot to learn!. Not only would I have gotten out of that chair immediately, but would have reported them to board that governs dentists, and then found another dentist!. Yeah, it might be "gross", but it is also illegal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ok, so this sometime happens!. The suction line gets clogged and there's no way to know until it's used again!. I'm assuming they removed the part that goes into your mouth and then removed the clog!.!.!.!.or maybe the part that goes into your mouth wasn't even hokked up yet!. I would also guess that, if they had to remove the tip, they might have put a new tip on, although that would really be mostly for show as the part that goes into your mouth wasn't contaminated!.!.!.it's replaced with each patient and is either disposable or sterilized!. There's really nothing to report to anyone here!Www@Answer-Health@Com

VEE,
if this suction was blocked before you ever sat down in the chair, then this was from a previous patient!. However, if it were so this wouldn't have EVER happened!. The clog happened AFTER you had started your dental procedure so the clog was YOURS!.
In this case the clog is cleared and the tip changed!.
You have nothing to fear!. This office did everythibg right even though you may not have been aware of every step inolved!.

Hello, The answer is simple!.!.!.the DDS toatlly violated both prifessional and legal ethics!. The tiips are supposed to be sterilized between patients if they are not the disposable kind!.!.!.Report the DDS immediately to the State Dental Board!.!.!.you may actually save someones life!.!.!.What if the previous patient was HIV positive!.!.!.You might want to get the DDS to sign a statement as to that issue so that you know if you need to be concerend aWww@Answer-Health@Com

as long as the removable piece that goes into your mouth was not contaminated there is nothing wrong!.
Things happen and vacuum gets plugged, but the disposable (or autoclavable) tip that is in contact with a patient HAS to be changed every time when the sterile environment was compromised!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would not think so! I know the plastic tip gets changed in between patients, was that removed then the cotton ball pulled out!? If not I would say the plastic tip was contaminated & should have been changed! Any division in the medical feild should practice bio-security!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
