How can I stop pain from bruxism?!

Question: How can I stop pain from bruxism!?
I've been grinding my teeth in my sleep for at least 6 years (that's when I realized I did it) and usually I just feel some tension in my jaw when I wake up, but every once in a while I have excruciating pain for a few days to a couple weeks at a time!. I'm having one of those episodes now!. The entire left side of my face hurts!. My eye, ear, cheek, teeth, even the left side of my tongue!. I'm completely miserable!. Tylenol does absolutely nothing and a hot water bottle rarely helps me, and it's not helping now!. To complicate matters, I'm 37 weeks pregnant!. I finally broke down today and called my doctor who prescribed 12 Vicodin for me!. I can take 1 or 2 every six hours!. I took one and it wore off after 3 hours!. I'm planning to take two before bed tonight so I might be able to sleep, but I'm not too keen on relying on meds, especially since I've read that pregnant women should STOP taking Vicodin late in pregnancy so the baby isn't born addicted!. So I'll take these until they're gone in a couple of days but I'm hoping I can find something else to help!.

I've seen some jaw and neck exercises that are supposed to help with bruxism but they say not to do them if you're experiencing moderate or severe pain because you need to keep the jaw relaxed!. Are there any exercises that you CAN do while in pain, to stop the pain!? Is there anything else!? I spent a good part of my day today sitting on the floor in the fetal position rocking back and forth and moaning and crying!. I don't want to spend any more days like this!. :-(Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
You poor thing! Get yourself a couple of bags of frozen peas(these really conform to the shape of your jaw)!.Place the bags, one on each side of your jaw and slowly stretch open as wide as is comfortable and hold it for a count of 10!.Repeat this 3 times!. Then take wash cloths and get them wet with very warm, warm as you can stand water!. Place the warm compress on your jaw area and leave it there until it cools!. Repeat 3 times!. This should help break up all the muscle tension !. Try this as many times a day as you can fit in,but at least try for twice a day and especially before bedtime!.
When your muscles are no longer in spasm( that is what it sounds like you have now), try a night guard!. You can buy one at the drugstore, but really ,a custom one from the dentist will fit much better!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
