The only advantage laser gum surgery has over traditional scalpel gum surgery is that it coagulates as it goes, and is supposedly less painful afterwards!. Also, patients like the idea of "high-tech" dentistry, although this is not a good reason to choose one over the other!.
For the right cases, laser gum surgery can be as good as scalpel surgery!. However, you cannot do the same range of gum techniques with lasers as with a scalpel!.
There are basically 2 layers of gum - the attached gum, and the unattached gum!. The attached gum is a very important zone of gum that protects your roots!. In laser surgery, this is often cut back!. That can be OK if you've got lots of attached gum, but if you don't, then it can be a big mistake!. With scalpel surgery, you can MOVE the attached gum up instead of just cutting it off!.
