Question: Ok silly question but ive always wondered if my dentist screwed up a long time ago (anastezia)!?
I know i didnt spell it right but i dont feel like looking up the correct spelling :)!.

so a looooong long time ago when i was very young (under 10 years of age!.!.!.im 17 now) I went in for some dental work!. I'm not exactly sure what it was that they were doing but whatever it was required me to be "asleep"!. they did not give me anything intraveniously (lol terrible spelling this late!.!.!.they didnt give me a shot of anything)!. but they put a mask over my face and told me to take deep long breaths and count backwards!. i remeber telling the doctor i was kindof nervous but he said not to worry because id be completely asleep and not able to feel a thing!.!.!.well once he started to work on my mouth i remeber kindof freaking out cause it didnt feel like they had given me any kind of sedative medication at all! I could feel everything, hear everything, and could even talk!.!.!.well in the beginning i had mentioned that i was not getting tired and he said not to worry i have to concentrate on being sleepy!.!.!.so basically i pretended to be put under because i assumed this was how it was supposed to feel!. i heard and felt every step of the dental work!.

well afterwords i mentioned it to my mother and she said "did it hurt you!?" and i said!.!.!.nothing worse then a bad pinch in the center of my teeth!.!.!.like chewing on aluminum foil!.

i always assumed that to some extent i hadnt been given enough of whatever it was!.!.!.but the fact that it didnt feel like i had been given anything at all was an illusion!.!.!.because if i hadnt been given anything, it probably would have hurt VERY bad!. but the other day i was watching the movie AWAKE, and all i could think about was when that happened when i was a child!. during dental procedures, are you supposed to be completely aware!? or was i maybe more resistent to what they were using!.!.!.

was what i was given supposed to just numb me up!? if so then why did the doctor keep telling me that i should be getting really tired and fall alseep!?

its nothing that scarred me for life!.!.!.its just something ive from time to time wondered about!.!.!.that procedure was the closest ive ever come to any kind of surgery!.!.!.so i dont know if maybe it takes a little more to knock me out then most others!.!.!.thats the only situation i have to go by!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

he more than likely gave you nitrous!.!.It doesn't put you to sleep!. it's supposed to relax you!. Most dentists will use it on children!. While on nitrous you'll still feel, hear, see everything, you'll just be more relaxed!.!.!. most people equate it with being drunk!. once the procedure is done he'll turn the nitrous off and leave the oxygen on to "flush" the nitrous out and you're fine!. if you felt anything he either chose not to use anesthetic and you felt the cold water from the drill on your tooth ( dentists will sometimes choose not to inject anesthetic if the cavity isn't deep) or you may have felt the actual injection itself and just remember it being in the tooth!. or it could just be that the anesthetic wasn't given time to work or you weren't given enough before he started

we use it at my office ALL the timeWww@Answer-Health@Com

You weren't ever really and truly put to sleep!. They gave you what is called "laughing gas" in laymans terms!. It would cause you to feel exactly as you described!. It isn't used much anymore, or at least not in my area!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Dentists will nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas!. Most people will fall asleep for a short period!. You may very well have a high sedation tolerance, as some people do!. It depends on what they did as to how much pain you might expect!. Also, they might have run out of gas or had defective equipment!. Too many unknowns to tell you anything except to guess!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Hmmm !.!.!. I have a very similar story to yours!. When I was younger I had teeth taken out, and I was given some stuff (sorry, not sure what it's called) that's supposed to totally numb that area!. I remember I ended up feeling EVERYTHING, and it hurt like crazy!. A few years later I had to have more teeth taken out, and again I was given that numbing stuff, and all I felt was a bit of pressure against my tooth!. Didn't hurt at all!. I suspect the first dentist did not do it right, coz I really don't think that if they knew that pain they would allow that to be done to people, children in particular!. This is probably the same for you!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
