Wisdom teeth to come out tomorrow am, help!?!

Question: Wisdom teeth to come out tomorrow am, help!!?
I've never had this procedure done and want to know what to expect!? Earlier this week my teeth were killing me and the dentist took X-rays and said I needed my wisdom teeth pulled!. I've been taking Hydrocodone and that has relieved the pain tremendously!. I've heard different things from friends on how they reacted during and after the procedure!? What happened to you!? Can I still take my Hydrocodone after the procedure!? Will they give me Novocaine and laughing gas, or will they put me to sleep!? Can I go to work the next day, or will the Surgeon suggest that I stay off for a couple of days!? I'm going on a day trip in a couple of days, will I be okay to go on that!? Any advice will be helpful!? I'm scared like a little kid again, even though I'm an adult!? They better give me a lollipop after I go through the mess!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had mine out a *long* time ago, so YMMV !.!.!. dental techniques might have improved over the last 30 years !.!.!.

1) Can I still take my Hydrocodone after the procedure!?

I suppose so, but I doubt you'll need to!. I've also had other injuries (broken bones) that required that level of pain relief, but post-op pain from wisdom tooth extraction wasn't one of them -- you'll probably end up with Advil or Tylenol!.

2) Will they give me Novocaine and laughing gas, or will they put me to sleep!?

They gave me gas + IV anesthetic, and I was out like a light!. Didn't really wanna be awake for it anyway!.

3) Can I go to work the next day, or will the Surgeon suggest that I stay off for a couple of days!?

You could, I suppose, but you won't feel like it!. Not to mention the swelling; you'll look like a chipmunk for at least a week!.

4) I'm going on a day trip in a couple of days, will I be okay to go on that!?

Again, that's all based on my wisdom tooth extraction back in the 1970s !.!.!. but maybe things have improved some!. The biggest annoyance for me was the swelling and the length of time it took for it to go down!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

All I remember from having mine out was it kinda felt like the guy was really having to jerk pretty hard to get 'em out though!. You should have been told the plan, but I wouldn't worry!. Pills are good!. Pills are just so dam good!. They give you several days worth too afterwords!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had all 4 pulled in the dentist office with just novocaine, and he sent me home and told me to take tylenol, and I went to work the next day, don't be scared, and yes you'll be fine for your trip!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I had my taken out when I was 19!. they gave me a "gas-mask", the little mask to go over my mouth and nose!. i passed out almost instantly and when i awoke my teeth had been pulled!. I had to keep gauze in the back of my mouth for a few days!. I took ibuprofen or acetaminophen (advil or tylenol) and it really didn't hurt!. i've heard people complain of the pain, but it didn't hurt me much at all!. I had to have a ride home after the procedure b/c i was drowsy from the gas!. I felt a little drowsy for a few days after the procedure, but, other than that I was fine!. I don't think you'll get the lollipop b/c you'll have gauze in your mouth!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Yes, you can take the same pain reliever after the procedure!.

The choice of technique is based on the surgeun's preference, however, the goals are to achieve a level of patient comfort that allows the surgeon to work rapidly and efficiently and that limit the patient's experience to the minimal number of unpleasant effects!. Whether a deep intravenous sedative ( putting you to sleep) or a light general anesthetic is used, most surgeuns intend their patients to have a profound amnesia of the procedure!.

No you cant go to work the next day!. There will be swelling but you can control it and ask the surgeon to give u parenteral steroids, the most common is a single administration of 8 mg of dexamethasone before surgery!. Expect a modest amount of swelling in the area of surgery for 3 to 4 days with the swelling completely dissipating by about 10 days!. You are required to take pain relievers for 2 to 3 days on a routine basis and intermittently for several more days!. You will have some mild soreness in the region for 2 to 3 weeks after the surgery!. Expect to experience trismus or the inability to open your mouth interfering oral hygiene and eating habits!. It will gradually reolve and return to normal by 10 to 14 days after surgery!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
