I'm a third year dental student in the US!. Here's the breakdown of each of the four years of dental school:

Year 1: Dissect an entire human cadaver in gross anatomy!. We take the course right along with the med students (same lectures and exams and all that!.) Also in first year, we practice examining each other in the clinic, charting gum levels, doing cleanings, etc!. And in the preclinical laboratory we're learning things like pouring up models and basic labwork!.

Year 2: Pretty much an entirely preclinical year!. Preclinic is basically how you simulate dentistry before they let you up in clinic!. We get these hilarious heads on sticks with a full mouth inside them (plastic teeth) and we learn how to do everything! Fillings, crown preps, tooth mods for partial dentures, etc!. etc!. We have exams where we need to prepare a tooth in a given amount of time and get graded by the faculty!. The standards are EXTREMELY high before they let you go upstairs to clinic (the cutoff for failure is usually half a millimeter!.) You also work on real human extracted teeth when you learn root canals, since there's no other way to simulate how complicated canals can be!.

You also learn more complicated lab work, like making actual crowns and bridges, working more with stone and plaster, making dentures from scratch, etc!.

Years 3 and 4: you're in clinic working on real patients! In most schools, you get a set of patients and you just do whatever they need!. So you may be doing your first root canal in your first week in clinic! Or you may find yourself just doing a bunch of cleanings until someone finally shows up who needs a cavity!. There are certain points along the way where you stop and check in with your professor before moving on!. But clinic is basically just like a huge dental office and the students are doing dentistry!.

By the way, on top of all this we take around 10 academic courses per semester too!. It's quite a workload! (This semester I'm taking 22 courses overall, around 29 credits!.) phew! :)

Here's a picture of my very own Fred the Head!. I couldn't have gotten through second year without him!!! That's my hand :)

Hi! I graduated in The Philippines and now I'm taking up the USnational dental board exams!. When we were students, as first and second year dental students, we practiced a lot on pig's jaws, Manequins with phantom jaws and teeths, casts, and extracted teed mounted on phantom heads!. then 3rd year up to graduating years we have actual patient requirements, we treated about a hundred cases per student as requirement to graduate, plus hospital duties, and community services as dentists!. We are strictly supervised by our Professors and clinical advisers and instructors to make sure we do everything correctly!.

Hope I helped you with my sharing!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I wondered this same thing the other day! I was thinking it could be dead people!. Or maybe they use a type of dummy!?
It's probable that they use a type of software, maybe!? I think most of their experience comes from watching their seniors!.
The reason I say this is because pulling teeth doesn't seem like rocket science!. However, being sure that the tooth should come out needs knowledge!. The other thing is drilling teeth!. They need to understand how far to go!.!.!.and when to STOP!

It would be interesting to see how they learn to do fillings, etc!.

ps, I tried googling for dentist and 'practice', but 'practice' means surgery!. If you search for 'dummy', it talks about how dummies create overbite!!!
