Taking kids to the dentist / doctor can be difficult, especially when they are afraid to go in the first place!. The dentist that we take our kids to is a pediatric dentist so they have a small playroom set up in the front with a movie on!. This helps since it's the waiting that can be the hardest part!. If your dentist does not have this sort of thing, you'll want to bring along something to help keep her distracted during the wait!. Bring along the Game Boy or pick up an activity book or something that she is interested in!.

Also important, perhaps just for me but I think for my kids too, is to emphasize that you are going to help them!. If the tooth is causing her pain make sure that she understands that the reason for the visit is to make the pain go away!.

When it's time to go back to see the dentist, remember that your daughter will be looking to you for reassurance and watching your reactions!. Stay calm and reassuring!. Remind her that the dentist is there to help her and that she is being brave (even if that isn't what you are thinking at the time)!. She'll make it through it and she will be brave, but that's not always easy to see when you are in the middle of it!.

As for sedation, I wouldn't be afraid of it!. It is there to ease pain and calm down the patient!. I don't believe in drugging my kids either, however our kids haven't suffered any side effects and it's made the experience go much better for them than it would have otherwise!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

When dentist go to convention that deal with medically compromised patients one of the first things they notice is that 90% of all dental emergencies could have been prevented!. For example fainting is a common emergency that can occur!. what has been notice if that the majority of the emergencies was due to dental fear or anxiety!. I am referring to people with serious medical conditions but it fits in with pediatrics too!. As time progresses you will notice that the dental questionaires are now asking about you dental experience as well as you medical history!. The one things that keepos coming up from these dental meeting is that these patients the high anxiety patients are excellent candidates for sedation!.

Keep in mind that the sedation is not something that will be ongoing!. It is for the most part a one time deal, and thats it!. The alternative is forcing, restraing the kid risk of injury if the child becomes eratic ( the handpiece spins at 400,000 rpm, so there is potential for serious harm) not to mention the mental trauma that can last for a long time as a result of such a traumatic experiece!. I would not rule out sedation!. If you do decided them to try sedation on you child check with you state dental board to see if a special permit is required and then find if the dentist you are considering has that permit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The laughing gas really just calmed my daughter down, both of them actually!. They were just out of it and seemed at peace!. Let her know you will be right with her (if you will)!. I always take them to their favorite spot after a major treatment at the doc or dentist office!. I know it is like bribing but hey sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!.
Other than the laughing gas, did they offer sedation!. They gave my girls a sedative in liquid form then had to wait an hour for it to take effect then they used the gas afterwards!. Usually the sedative will keep them calm before they have to go back and the gas is just a reassurance they won't snap out of it before the meds wear off!.
Hope this helps, BTW Mine have no problem going to the dentist now!. Ages 10,10 and 7 with a 2 yo that will be seeing the dentist for the first time in about a year!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Usually the Tooth Fairy route works well too!. You may not want to but staying out of the room helps the Dr and his/her assistant work better with your child they are easier to work with usually they will "act" up a bit in front of mom or dad so they can leave the room!. I like to take my time with the little ones and assure them that everything will be ok and we just want to make their teeth feel better so they can eat whatever their fav food is!. They just need a lot of reassurance and they also need to feel comfortable with whoever is working on them just like how you would want to feelWww@Answer-Health@Com

"oral conscious sedation" plus laughing gas and a trip to toys r us afterwards !.!.!. your 6 yr old won't remember the extraction and will be calm!. A pedo is more patient than a regular dentist!. There is nothing wrong with giving your child this sedation!. It wears off in a couple hours and your child will not be traumatized by the whole dental visit!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I got my tooth pulled when i was 2, and i didn't even cry!.

Try not to talk about it too much, but when it does get brought up reassure her that the doctors are nice and gentle and that it won't hurt!.
tell her it might be a little bit sore after but its not as scary as it sounds!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

oh wow yeah when I was little I had to get a lot of teeth pulled
let her squeeze your hand while they do it if possible, that helped me haha and have some sort of reward like say I'll buy you a toy for being good or something, just try to help her relax, tell her it's going to be okay and she'll feel better after it's all over withWww@Answer-Health@Com
