Question: Tell me everything i need to know about a herbst appliance!?
and also, do they make your teeth crooked when they move your jaw!? because my teeth are already straight and they're taking my braces off before putting the herbst appliance on!. and i was wondering what they were gonna do if the herbst apliance is gonna make my teeth crooked!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Your orthodontist can probably tell you most of what you need to know about the Herbst appliance!. I am an orthodontic assistant and at my office we usually use the Herbst before finishing the braces portion of treatment!. I don't know what kind of effect the appliance has on teeth when you aren't using the anchorage of the other teeth that you get when the braces are attached to the teeth and the Herbst!. I would imagine, though, that your orthodontist would not want to mess up all of the hard work that they just did with the braces to get your teeth straight!!!
As far as info about the Herbst, it is an appliance that postures the lower jaw forward!. It actually kind of dislocates the lower jaw from the socket and directs that part of the lower jaw (the condyle) to fill in the gap as it grows!. It is not painful to have the Herbst as it simply holds the lower jaw forward!. The Herbst corrects the way that your back teeth fit together when your lower teeth bite too far behind your upper teeth (class II) and also corrects overjet (when your upper front teeth "stick out" to far in front of the lower teeth)!. We usually leave the Herbst in for 10-12 months for our patients!. Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
