How can I get over my fear of the dentist?!

Question: How can I get over my fear of the dentist!?
I have the biggest fear of the dentist!. I haven't had work done on my teeth in over 8 years!. I really want to go, but everytime I think about it I get very anxious and think that something bad is going to happen to me at the dentist!.!. I am very embarrassed by my teeth, all the back ones on one side are gone from decay!. I know GROSS!!! I can't take medicines that relax you because they do the opposite affect, (I know that is very rare), so if you have any advice I would love to hear it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Just go!. You may be nervous, but do it for your dental health! Dentists are required to be pleasant and informative towards their patients!. Letting your teeth rot out is pretty ad- infection could go to your brain and kill you! It won't be so bad!.!.!.start with small steps, i!.e!. schedule a checkup or a cleaning!. Take a breather, and just do it!. Relax!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I was terrified of the dentist after a very bad experience at one!. I still have alot of anxiety when I know I have to go ( I am 43 now), thankfully I have a dentist who understands my fears and is very gentle and patient!.
Just explain to the dentist how scared you are, you will NOT be the first or the last one to feel this way!. I try to remember whatever pain I will feel is only temporary and it helps get me through!. I also make sure to ask for extra numbing to start off with!.
Please know that many people regardless of age are very afraid of dentist visits but they are needed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

A LOT of people have dental anxiety, and it gets frustrating when it prevents you from getting the care you need!. You sound motivated to eventally get your mouth back into shape though, and that's really important!. You understand that dental decay is an infection, and that letting it go could really endanger your health!. I'm a dental student and I try a lot to help my patients feel more comfortable!. SO many people are afraid, and a lot of them because they had bad experiences in the past!. Here are some things I do:

~When you are getting an injection, keep your eyes OPEN, and the pain will immediately be less and usually goes away!. When you close your eyes, your brain makes up what is going on, and you feel all your sensory nerves much more intensely!. Also, slowly lift up one foot, let it down, and do that to the other!. It does absolutely nothing, but it's amazing how distracting it is!. Also, ask the dentist to use topical before the injection!.

~If it will help you, ask the dentist to show you all the parts of the syringe and even how it's put together!. Often, seeing it will desensitize you and get you used to it!. For some people it makes it worse, so only you can decide that!.

~Make sure you are TOTALLY numb before the dentist does any work!. If you feel anything, raise one hand and ask if you can have some more anesthetic!. (You're usually numb enough that you won't feel the additional injection!.) There's no reason to not be completely numb, so don't just try to stick it out!. That's unecessary pain!

~Ask the dentist to explain everything step-by-step!. Some things feel worse than they are or look scary when they aren't (like the bright blue curing light or the low-speed handpiece!.) If you understand more, you'll feel like you have more control!.

~Wear headphones, especially with something like an audiobook or a funny stand-up comedian!. That distraction will make a big difference!. Even better, know anyone with those movie goggles!? Then you'll be off in your own world :)

~Go frequently, with short visits!. It'll help you get used to the dental setting and you'll feel yourself feel more and more comfortable

~Only go to a dentist that understands your anxieties and who is patient!. Otherwise, you won't get anywhere!.

Good luck! :)Www@Answer-Health@Com
