Can a tooth be removed when you have an abscess?!

Question: Can a tooth be removed when you have an abscess!?
My son had an abscess ( he's 5) and was given antibiotics they didn't clear the abscess up!.
When i took him to the dentist yesterday he took the tooth out, i have been told that this was wrong as a tooth shouldn't be taken out until the abscess had cleared up!.
My son was in a great deal of pain during the extraction and his face was very swollen afterwards!.
Was i told right or was it for the best!?

Answers:
no!.!.!.absolutely not!.!.!.it is dangerous to remove a tooth when the infection is rampant!.!.!.will do more harm than good!. anti biotics will clear up the problem!.!.!.then the tooth can be treated!.

you now need to watch closely for further infection!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Normally, the dentist will only preform the extraction after the antibiotics have been prescribed and the patient has been on them for a few days (except in extreme cases when immediate extraction is necessary because of supremely advanced infection)!. Extraction is only necessary BECAUSE antibiotics weren't enough of a help or the tooth is too damaged to save - otherwise dentists usually opt for a root canal to relieve pressure but keep the tooth!. In small children, extraction is more common than in adults because the tooth is only a baby tooth and will be replaced, making a root canal an essential waste of efforts and money!.

Extraction can sometimes be painful, even after numbing, particularly if there is a raging infection that hasn't gone away!. kids are sometimes more sensitive to this than adults!. Your son was probably very frightened, which enhanced the pain!. However, the dentist would not have preformed the extraction lightly - a course of antibiotics had helped ensure that the procedure was safe, even if they hadn't ousted the infection, and he acted accordingly!. The tooth had to come out, or the infection would recur and the pain would continue!.

Swelling and pain are common afterward, but should get better in a few days!. Manage his pain with OTC Motrin or Advil, and have him keep his head propped up with ice on the check to reduce swelling!. He should be in less pain than the infection already, or shortly!. If the pain increases or swelling doesn't diminish considerably in three days time, take him to a pediatrician - the infection may have spread!.

Good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have had 2 abcess's and each time the dentist said that they had to get rid of the infection before the tooth could be removed!. I begged and pleaded the last time for him to just remove the tooth straight away as i was in agony and he did so at my own risk!. He said that having it removed was dangerous as the infection could spread but i was in serious agony and i just kinda refused to get off the chair until it was removed!. However i was lucky and had the infection never spread!. I think your dentist was in the wrong for removing the tooth though as if the infection spreads your son is in for yet more pain!. I hope he gets better soon!.!.!. toothache is the worst kinda pain and i really feel for him :o(Www@Answer-Health@Com

If the tooth was extracted while he was taking antibiotics, it shouldn't make any difference as the antibiotics would act as a protective umbrella!.

There's always a certain amount of swelling and pain after a tooth extraction, but a good dentist would never have allowed a young child to suffer like that during the extraction!. He'll probably be petrified of dentists now after such an experience!.

I hope he's at least feeling much better now!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

normally the dentist prefer to treat the abscess first with antibiotics then if necessary extract the tooth, if the abscess is still there then then it should come away with the extracted tooth, but if the pain does not subside within say 2 days then go back to your dentist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I doubt it matters that the tooth was removed while an abscess was still present!.!.

Your son shouldn't have been in any pain, though!. Nobody should have pain during dental work, although some discomfort can be expected!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

It was probably for the best but normally you should not extract with an abscess, I had a tooth pulled years ago with an abscess and I screamed blue murder with painWww@Answer-Health@Com

it should clear up if the antibiotics are still being use , the dentist must have thought it was cleaned up enough to do the job Www@Answer-Health@Com

no it makes the drainage of the puss!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
