Here's the cons: it sucks!.

As a parent, you've got to do everything you can to relax your son and make sure he understands that it's important to take care of your teeth!.

Here's the pros: Leave the work and the cavity spreads, leading to infection in the child's mouth and illness in his mouth (as he would be swallowing that infection all day)!.

Not only will the cavity spread to the body, it'll also begin to damage the adult teeth still under the gums!. There is no barrier or anything!! Don't listen to people who tell you it's going to fall out anyway!. If it were going to fall out, doctor could tell by the x-rays and he wouldn't suggest repairing it!. It's a huge pain in the butt!!

What he's going to get, most likely, is a baby-root canal!. It's just a baby tooth, so it's a much easier and quicker procedure!. It's not at all like an adult root canal!.

The spacer idea above is okay too, if the tooth is in the back!. It's an UGLY metal thing!. I don't know what guarentee he wants you to get!. Doesn't make much sense to me!.

Now, if you are nervous at all, I have a very important suggestion for you!. Take your child to a pediatric dentist!. Family dentists sound friendly, but they and staff are not prepared to be dealing with young, nervous children!. Sometimes they can resort to unsafe methods to complete treatment or the tooth can be not taken care of properly because the patient isn't able to cooperate; teeth can be left unsealed!. I'VE SEEN IT!!

You can't really blame them, they are simply not the best resource for children's care!.

Consult with a pediatric dentist and he will be able to treat the child with the least pain and stress!. We talk to the children a lot, explain things, hold their hands, smile!. It's what we do all day, everyday!. We take care of your babies!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

At this age the procedure is usually referred to a a pulpotomy or pulpectomy!. The dentist probably used the term root canal to make it easier to explain!. I refer to them as "baby root canals"!. It is not uncommon to have this done to save the baby tooth and keep spacing for proper eruption of his permanent teeth later!. Early tooth loss can cause orthopedic and orthodontic problems later!. Since it is a back tooth he will probably keep this tooth until he is around 10-12 years of age!. If it were removed with no space retention that is enough time to cause some problems with the permanent tooth!. It is a reasonable procedure and we do them all the time!. The cost is usually way less than that for an adult root canal!.
Hope this helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

The expense would be my first thought!. How much for a root canal and all the extras vs having the tooth pulled and a spacer put in!. The tooth will fall out eventually but probably closer to age of 11sh!. I hate to make it sound about money but I think a dentist suggest the most expensive treatment first sometimes!. I would ask him/her what your other options are!. I would also ask what type of "guaranty" come with a root canal!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Wow!. I had a root canal done when I was 22 on a tooth!. 4 years later, I had to get it retreated because it got infected, which involved getting a new cap put on it!. I had no insurance the first time, so it cost about $400 to get it done at a medical college, and I paid about $900 for the re-treatment!.

The thing is, if you're going to get a root canal, he has to take care of it!. I'm assuming that if he's 6 years old and needs a root canal, he's not taking very good care of his teeth!. I mean, in all honesty that is like having a heart-attack in your mid-20's!. if he's not going to take care of it, just get it extracted and you can go with a bridge or a replacement!. If he his taking care of his teeth and his enamel is just that weak, you may want to consider extraction because you would probably have to get root canals on other decaying teeth!.

If I were you, I would go through with the root canal and make him take care of his teeth! Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've had a root canal done!. Im surprised they can do them for a child!. If the nerve is taken out properly then it does ease the pain!. But for me the day after was very painful!. *touch wood* my tooth doesn't hurt any more!. It's quite a long procedure though, about an hour!. It wasn't much fun for me, so I don't know how your little boy would be able to sit still for so long!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

I would suggest not to do it because within a short time he is going to lose his "baby teeth" and his permanent teeth will then appear!. At this stage, or perhaps even earlier, he should be discouraged from eating sweets!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
