Why am I prescribed antibiotics for pain due to a needed root canal?!

Question: Why am I prescribed antibiotics for pain due to a needed root canal!?
Hello,
I got my wisdom teeth pulled about a month and a half ago, everything was fine until about two weeks later!. I thought the pain was just due to the extraction and it will eventually go away, so I kept taking Motrin around the clock, the pain was pretty annoying!. Well the pain got worse, alot worse!. I called the dentist and was able to come in 4 days later, in the meantime I took some motrin!. He took x rays and noticed some decaying next to the tooth I had a root canal done in 1993! I'm wondering why this happened right after the fact that I had my teeth pulled, I didn't have ANY pain before!. Anyway, I have to have a root canal done in a week and in the meantime I have some vicodin es's and amoxicilin!. Will the amoxicilin take away the pain so I don't have to go back to the motrin(I worry about the long term effects such as GI bleeding, I've been taking it for a month and a half)!. What is the purpose of taking antibiotics for this prior to the procedure!? It's not an infection it's nerve damage isn't it!?
ThanksWww@Answer-Health@Com

I would assume the root canal/pain is just a coincidence and not a side effect from the extraction!. I too had to take motrin for 6 weeks because of dental pain and I felt the same way you do!. The dentist might have noticed an abcess or the start of one to prescribe antibiotics!. If that is the case the pain should get better with the anti!. You cannot have a root canal done if there is an active infection so best to clear up any trouble beforehand!. It is decay which hurts because of the nerve, but not necessarily nerve damage!. Just hang in there and I hope your pain gets better!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

The decay would be a form of infection and the pain would stem from that!. I could be wrong but it makes sense and by eliminating the infection the pain would be relieved!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

The antibiotic is used to prevent infection not pain!. Www@Answer-Health@Com

Motrin is usually 800mg of ibuprofen!. Sometimes the milligrams is less!. Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory that keeps inflammation down, and can relieve pain!. Make sure you take it with food, or full stomach!. If nothing else, eat a couple of crackers, a piece of toast or half cup of milk, otherwise it will eat the lining of your stomach and cause a tummy ache!. The amoxicilin is a mild antibiotic to help with any infection or bacterial issues!. Vicodin is a stronger pain reliever usually given when you experience surgery or a procedure!. If one pill is too strong, take half!. Long term effects are more like years, not months!. So, don't even worry about it!. Since I am not a doctor/dentist/or technician, I suggest you call the doctor's office tomorrow and find out the facts!. You'll rest easier!. But, be sure to follow directions implicitly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
