Have you overcome your fear of the dentist? And how to cope during root canals?!

Question: Have you overcome your fear of the dentist!? And how to cope during root canals!?
I've always been terrified of the dentist, but in the last six months, I've had a few appointments, and most recently, last week, a root canal!.
The root canal was NOT the nightmarish experience feared by many, but a painless, if a long and boring procedure!
I still get shaky and scared when going to an appointment, but I can now take myself and be sensible enough to know that I'm doing a good thing for my health by overcoming my fear!. I'm pretty proud of myself!

Anyway, I'm interested in finding out how other people have coped with their dentist phobia and techniques they use to get past the nerves and be more cheery when they walk into the dentist (rather than looking like they're about to face Death)!.

Additionally, I have a second root canal coming up, and I am more dreading the length of the appointment (it takes an hour and fifteen minutes) and the eventual jaw ache, than anything else!. Can anyone suggest ways to make the appointment more comfortable and have the time go faster!? If you can share stories, even better!. I want to reassure more scared people out there!
Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Oh man!.!.!. good question!. What I did was I listened as loud as possible to the most soothing music I have which is "Eva Cassidy"!. Very good for my dental apmts!. I use her every time!. LOUD!.!.!. until I suddenly find myself CALM!. Then sometimes I find myself not listening to music at all and just listening to the dentist talk!. I get in a clouded state of mind after a while!. On a rare occasion I take half a Xanax to help cope!. I didn't go for 7 years until 2 years ago!. It's definately easier!. Also, avoid any caffinated beverages a week before any appointments!.!.!. it gives your body time to get off the caffeine and chill out a bit!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

havent had a root canal yet, but i do hate the dentist!.
i went in to have 5 fillings done at the same time, which left my entire mouth numb (drinking was a problem) and very sore!. im not afraid of the dentist, but just like the next person, im not exactly comfortable with it!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I just suck it up, I mean the alternative is to lose your teeth and that is not attractiveWww@Answer-Health@Com

People who are that freaked out are more of a hazard to themselves, than the dentist could ever be!. A few years back I had my wisdom teeth removed and the dentist thanked me afterward and said that I was a very good patient, and I thought that was strange, but then she went on to tell me about how people would freak out in the chair and grab the instruments out of her hands and other crazy garbage!.

Seriously if people are that weird about going, they should probably opt to be put to sleep, because it would be safer for everyone involved!

Root canals can be lengthy and tedious, and for people who have a hard time keeping their mouthes open for a long time, or have a problem with choking, it can get annoying!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Whatever procedure I am getting done (by whatever kind of doctor) I always talk to them about how I feel about stuff!. If I am really enjoying a particular procedure I tell them (I told my dentist I liked the feeling of him stitching my incision, it felt really cool), if I am nervous about giving blood I tell them (I tell the blood girl my veins are deep and tiny, it takes a long time to find it, then she uses the child's size needles and is extra gentle), I know i do best if they pre numb the area before freezing, so I tell them I like it done that way!. It's best to be open and honest with health care practitioners!. They can easily change the way they do things for every single person that comes in!. I have never been afraid of the dentist or any other health care provider!. I get nervous, but with being able to communicate my feelings they are able to make my experience comfortable, if not a bit fun!.

Oh yeah and his mesmerizing eyes and dashing good looks went a long way to making it an awesome experience!. One of my criteria for choosing a dentist is looks!. Shallow, but if I have to stare at him for hours while he works on a root canal, he may as well be worth looking at!Www@Answer-Health@Com

I also have this fear, maybe not quite as bad but yes i have a fear of sitting in that chair!
Ask your dentist for Gas, even though that didn't help me (because i took it off ha ha) it might help you!.
I hope you overcome your fear!.!. also it's probably not going to hurt but i know you have heard that so many times and that's not even the case its your fear! im sorry you have this phobia but you're not the only one :)!.!.!. good luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com
