Question: I JUST GOT A RETAINER AND NEED HELP!?
I have a wack job orthodontist, he gave me a retainer today and it was just the bottom part, i got an impression for both top and bottom though!. He gave me a key and didn't really explain how to use it, he said i use it to take the retainer off and that's about all that I know, I didn't get a retainer case and he didn't tell me how to clean it or if I even have to clean it but I'm guessing i do!. You can't really ask him questions, he'd always get mad!?! (he's really really old!.) There is no way that I can go back for another visit, the cost is WAY too high!. You can get a case quite easily - sports shops might sell them as mouthguard cases (they're the same size), or you could just go and buy one from the dentist's or the chemist's!. You can buy cleaning solutions as well!.
As for how long you wear them:
Wear them constantly (as in, try to avoid taking them out at all apart from a little bit of cleaning) for about six weeks or so!.
Wear them for most of the time (you can take them out for a few hours each day) for about six months to a year!. Keep them in while you're eating!.
Wear them overnight (possibly evenings too) until you're about twenty!. That might seem a little extreme, but your teeth don't stop moving until about then!.
Don't take it out and lose it!. You'll regret it!. Your teeth will move!. Fast!. And it's ridiculously expensive to get new ones (I should imagine that's the case in the US, since it is here in the UK and we're on the NHS)!.
The best thing would be to consult your dentist, but you might not be able to do that!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

okay honestly try switching orthodontists, he sounds like a really bad one!.!. i have a great orthodontist and he tells me all i need because thats whet they are paid to do, not to be grouchy and now as i read your detailed information to this question, im starting to feel maybe you don just need retainers, maybe you need more or less!. go see a different orthodontist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Ok, sooo I had a retainer and I had to wear it at first the whole day ( for about 5 weeks) and then my dentist told me to only wear it at night and then take it off in the morning!. You should really brush it with toothpaste, because it can get pretty disgusting!. My sister got her retainer when she was 15 and she is 20 now, and our dentist still tells her to wear it!.!.!. but only at night!. After a while though, you could skip some days, like wear it at night on wednesday and thursday and sunday!.!.!. or something like that - but only after a year or so when your teeth get really comfterble with the retainer and dont shift around without it!. You probably wont have to wear for your whole life!.!.!. but probably most of it!.!.!.!.

If you have a clear retainer don't use toothpaste!. It will make it cloudy looking!. Just brush it with your toothbrush!.

What a key!?!?!?!? What the heck!? When I wore a retainer I didn't get any key!?!?!?!!! All I got was a retainer and a case for it!. He is soooo odd!. To clean it, you just take it out, (with your hands) and take a toothbrush and gently scrub it!. You have to wear your retainer day and night except remove it when you are eating!. I have NO clue what the key is for!. You can also call the office of the orthodontist over the phone and they can explain for FREE!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
haha! you HAVE TO wear it your whole life until your teeth fall out or your teeth WILL shift! sucks to say! i had braces a couple years back and i got a retainer!.!.!. i didn't wear it for two weeks and my teeth shifted! so you must wear it at all times until you orthodontist says you can wear it only to bed!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
