I had my first filling a week ago and I was SOOOOO scared of the needle!. As he knew it was my first and knew how nervous it was, my dentist offered me nitrous oxide so I organised to have that!. He gave me a very low dose and it didn't make me feel sick at all, just calm and relaxed and not anticipating the needle so much, so that when it came, I barely even realised it had happened!. Once the needle is in I think they turn down the concentration of the nitrous oxide and give you more oxygen, so you are still completely with it the whole time and can listen to and respond to the dentist as he or she does his thing (which is actually pretty impressive when you think about it!)!. I have two more to go next week and I'm not scared at all, though I will be having the nitrous again because it helped me so much more relaxed the first time!.

If you already have the appointment for your filling, I would recommend contacting your dentist beforehand and asking if they offer nitrous oxide (not all dentists have it unfortunately) and also making sure they have the equipment ready for you at your appointment, as they may have to book it out for you (ie there is often only one set at each practice and one of the other dentists or hygienists may need to use it at the time of your appointment)!. If you are just going for the check up at this stage and you are told then that you definitely do need a filling, have a chat to your dentist then, and if they use it, you should then be able to organise it with the dentist or receptionist at the time of booking your next appointment!.

A good dentist should also talk you through everything and make sure you are ok and ask you to give him or her a signal if you need him to stop at any time for the procedure, and also answer any questions you may have!. This should make you feel a lot more calm when it's all happening as well!.

Good luck!. It really won't be anywhere near as bad as you think, I promise!

By the way, I too had a bad experience with a needle (local anaesthetic) at the doctor when I was little and I only just realised this is where my fear of the dentist needle came from!. Apprarently the needles used in dentistry these days are so fine (much finer than they used to be) and that's why they are not as bad as people think and are often completely painless!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I know how you feel!! A while back I had to get the same thing, and I hid in the bathroom and was crying because I got so scared!
But in the end it wasn't too bad, they put numbing cream on my gum where they did the shot I could tell that hey were doing it, but I couldn't feel anything!.
So just breathe and get it over with as quickly as possible because if you keep thinking about it and putting it off, you'll become even more scared!.
Oh and whatever you do don't look at the needle at all and don't look when they're giving you the shot!

Good luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

When they go to give you the shot, ask them if they wouldn't tell you when they were going to do it, tell them to just do it!. And close your eyes so you don't think of the needle, and think of something else (a guy you like, your best friend, etc!.!.!.) O, and whatever you do, when they stick you, DO NOT move, it'll take two seconds and they'll be done!. Good Luck!!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Why don't you see if they can gas you!? I had my wisdom teeth removed, and they gave me laughing gas!. I'm sure if you told them of your needle phobia and asked for gas, they would be willing to do it!. Remember: if you're scared of something, the doctor's not going to know unless you assert yourself and tell them!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i have the same problem; you can get laughing gas but that might make you feel sick!. what i do is i bring my ipod and tell the doc to not let me see the needle then i put my my ear phones in my ear and turn the music up all the way and close my eyes relax remember to breathe and keep my mouth open, thats the fastest and easiest way for me!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

You need to find a dentist who specializes in people with dental phobias!. They usually will advertise as such!. Look in the yellow pages!. Then call them up and find out how they deal with this problem!. Many dentists will actually use drugs to sedate you so you don't have to be aware of what's going on!. Or they use nitrous oxide gas!. Don't put it off if your teeth need attention!. Many dentists are very understanding!., Find one of those! Good Luck!Www@Answer-Health@Com

well wenever i have to get
a shot or have to deal with pain
i think of Jesus and how he could
get nails hamered in his hands
and stabbed and hung
and i just feel better about dealing
with the (wat seems like not as bad)
pain!.!.!.sorry if u dont believe in God
just my opinionWww@Answer-Health@Com

Heres the deal!. Needles at the doctors go way into your body, needles at the dentist go only just below the surface and once the first 2 little pricks are done, your mouth is so numb you can't even feel the rest of the shots!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM! Here's what I do; I ask the dentist how deep the filling is going to be, and if it's not going to be that deep I just ask for no numbness/novicane stuff!. Sure it hurts a bit more but no needles and no numbness!.!.!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

oh i know what u mean! my sis is just like that!. but she brings music with her and turns it up, and just gets lost in the music!. hopefully that will help!. just try not to think about it!. concentrate on the chorus of your song!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I have a fear of needles too and when i got to the dentist the cavity was so small that it didn't even need a needle! Also, think happythoughts and focus on everything you are going to do after this!
I hope this helps!Www@Answer-Health@Com

i was, too until i discovered laughing gas!. it costs a little more, but the pain is not in your mouth, maybe over there by the door!. well, that was how i felt one time!. everyone is different, but usually you get "drunk" and just don't care!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

well you can always ask the dentist for a perspiration to help relax you or you can take the lauphing gas too or you can not think about it and think of an happy placeWww@Answer-Health@Com
