Is this normal after a tooth extraction?!
Question: Is this normal after a tooth extraction!?
I had a back molar extracted 2 days ago!. It was a failed root canal!. The pulp of the tooth was abscessed!.
I went to the emergency room and they couldn't help me (no x-ray technician)!. So they gave me 4-5 Novocaine shots and sent me to an emergency dentist!. There I got another 4-5 Novocaine shots and he extracted the tooth!.
The 1st day, I was in agonizing pain!. I had sharp shooting pains up my jaw to my ear!. I couldn't talk, chew, or even move!. The painkillers only worked for 1 or 2 hours!.
I kept checking my extraction site out for signs of infection or dry socket!. It looks great!. A nice scab is covering it!.
Last night after I took a new painkiller (my mother-in-law gave it to me), I was able to sleep for 6 hours! I have not taken a painkiller for 9 hours now (a record for me)!.
There seems to be a lull in the sharp shooting pains!. But my jaw is severely sore!. I looked in the mirror and that side of my face is pretty swollen!.
I have had teeth extracted before and it was no where near as painful and sore as this one!. But I am wondering if this one is just different!. Maybe the tooth was more infected or my jaw hurts from 10 Novocaine shots!?
How much pain is normal after a tooth extraction!? How many days should I let this go on for!? Is it normal for my jaw to be visibly swollen!?
Thanks!Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
I think at this point the pain could be normal however I would call the dentist who did the extraction!. You may need antibiotics as well as a better pain reliever and anti-infamitory medicationWww@Answer-Health@Com
