Answers:
1) A dentist isn't required to have a hygienist or a dental assistant at his/her practice!. Dentists usually hire hygienists to do the cleanings while they do more complicated procedures and dental assistants are hired to do the simple stuff (ie!. organizing the instruments, placing the dirty instruments in the autoclave machine, cleaning the operatory, etc!.)!. The dentist can technically do all of these things the hygienists and assistants do, but they're usually hired to make for better time management!.

In contrast, neither a hygienist or dental assistant can practice without being under the supervision of a dentist!.

2) Holding a suction would be the job of a dental assistant!. In recent years dentists increasingly have demanded that their assistants complete a dental assistant program!. In addition, many states have regulations in place that severely limit the duties a dental assistant can perform if he or she has not completed the necessary coursework!. I believe that holding a suction is part of the duties that a dental assistant can perform without completed coursework and that can be taught to the receptionist/assistant by the dentist!. But if you feel the receptionist/assistant is incompetent, you could kindly ask the dentist to be worked on without her!.

As for giving you wrong advice, I also find it funny that she was able to put a percentage on how much whiter your teeth would get!. Then again, you should take everything a dental assistant/receptionist says regarding dentistry with a grain of salt!. If you seek dental advice, your trusted sources are the hygienist, and most importantly, the dentist!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
