Question: Deep Scaling/Root Planning!!!!!!!!!!?
I'm getting a deep scaling tmrw and i am a big baby about going to the dentist. A couple days ago, I had just the normal scaling, but the dentist said that i needed deep scaling???!!! just the word "deep scaling" is just scaring me to death. i've heard that before the deep scaling, they numb the area. do they numb with gel or a shot??? and, do you feel ANY pain during the procedure??? i've heard that you dont feel anything...but is it true??? and what is the approximate time duration for the procedure???

Some patients get anesthetic for root planing and some don't. If you do get a shot then you should not feel anything during the cleaning. Your gums will probably be sore afterwards. Usually they recommend warm salt water rinses to help. The appointments are usually an hour but it depends on the hygienist and how many quads you are having scaled.
