Hello, j!

I had a similar case as you did, and I went through everything. So let me get started.

First of all - are your teeth straight? If they aren't I would just ask them to put them on anyway, even if the bite is off. If the condition is too bad they probably can't do anything to the bite, but they can sure straighten up your teeth. And then you can choose to do the surgery or not.

Second - I recommend you hint at your Orthodontist that you may want to look into surgery. I know you're afraid, but it's not that bad (I'll explain later). He'll probably recommend you to an oral surgeon and I highly suggest going, at least for a consultation.

Third - the surgery sounds terrible, but it isn't so bad. For me - I had to have a piece of my jaw sawed off, and then my upper jaw sawed off (above the upper teeth line / and yes, they can do this) and set back. I was absolutely terrified and passed out before they even put me under. I woke up - and I didn't feel a thing. It felt like I had no lower face, but there was a ringing pressure I could feel. That was it. It only started hurting after a few days, but then they put you under heavier medication. The worst part of the whole operation was having to eat through a straw, and having to learn to chew correctly. Oh, and they don't wire your jaw shut anymore - they just rubber it shut (MUCH less painful).

Fourth - You don't have to get the surgery (or you CAN'T) until you are fully matured, and you have to have the braces on for about a year before you can actually go through with it.

There ARE setback, though, and I would like to warn you.

1. This surgery has the chance of altering your looks slightly - which may be a good or bad thing given the person.

2. Most insurance companies no longer cover this surgery, and it's difficult to get them to do so.

3. There are many nerves that lie in your face, and if cut the wrong way, there could be a permanent bruise to the nerve. This is when you will have slight numbness in a certain spot of your face (this never happened to me).

The benefits go on and on, though.

1. You may be in a LOT of pain later on in your life if you don't get this done.

2. Your teeth my ware down wrong

3. You may not be able to eat food the right way

4. etc.

So my advice to you would be get the braces (if your teeth are crooked), and decide if you want to do the surgery later.

I hope I helped :)
