Have a question about dental work please help?!

Question: Have a question about dental work please help?
I am in need of dental work, and I just now got my dental insurance, but now im afraid of what is going to happen when i go see the dentist for the first time in about 16 years. I didnt take good care of my teeth, and now im paying for it. I have several teeth that are cracked in the middle, and i have some that are just pieces left. My 6 front teeth are my biggest worry, I am deathly afraid of the dentist. Does anyone out there know what I might could possibly have done and the process that i will be going through to get these issues corrected? I am scared of having my teeth that i do have pulled, but I want to have a normal smile again. Please help me. I just mainly want to know what to expect when i go to see the dentist or what i could tell them that i want.

Oh goodness, well now that you have dental insurance make sure to go to your regular check up every single year. It will probably take several visits to get your teeth back to "normal." I'm sure they will start with X-rays and a general examination of your teeth to tell you what the problem is so that you know what to expect. Then you will probably meet with the dental hygenist and she/he will clean your teeth before the actual dentist sees your teeth. Don't be too worried about it, it will be well worth it. Best of luck

The first visit is just for an exam, no worries there, some x-rays and the dentist sizing up which tooth needs what, then he/she will spell out the game plan for you. It's really not as bad as the fear you have, which I understand used to be a chicken too, but after you've been around the block with having tooth work done, you'll realize it's no big thing. They can prescribe you some chill pills to take prior to going in, and possibly the night before so you can sleep ( if they are cool). Let them tell you what your options are, a decent dentist won't pull a tooth that can be saved, especially on someone so young, and if you need several pulled, you might prefer going to an oral surgeon and being knocked out. Also it depends on the dentist, some won't do certain extractions, so just let yourself relax for now, let them size you up first, before you let your imagination run wild.

Your options are dependent upon what kind of insurance you have. When you see your dentist, they will be able to tell you what will and will not be covered. The first thing you need to do is make a hygiene appt. Since it's been so long, this may be somewhat painful. The dentist will come in and do an exam. The teeth that are just pieces will most likely have to be removed. The ones that are cracked down the middle will either have to be removed or have root canals, posts (maybe, to fix the compromised structure of the tooth), and crowns. If they have to be removed, you can get dental implants. These are quite expensive and not covered by most insurances. An oral surgeon will remove the teeth and once you heal, he'll place a "male" screw in the bone. Once it is determined that your body isn't rejecting the implant, a "female" crown will be made and adhered to the "male" part. Another option is getting a bridge. Say you have teeth 1 2 3 4. If 1 and 4 are healthy, and 2 and 3 are missing, teeth 1 and 4 would be crowned and connected by pontics (these look like crowns/teeth, but are not actually covering a tooth) where 2 and 3 should be. A final option would be to get a partial. This is kind of like a denture, but not as uncomfortable. It will have metal brackets that secure to your healthy teeth to hold it in place. Missing teeth will be made out of acrylic and when you have the partial in, no one will see where your teeth are missing. You should really just make a cleaning appt and your dentist will be able to better explain all of this.

First things first, do your annual cleaning! They'll clean up your teeth and then take x rays to look for cavities. The Dentist will then examine your teeth and go over the x rays. Explain to you what he sees and what will need to be done. Then possibly tell you what you need to do at home. Flossing, brushing with a certain toothpaste (if needed) and rising etc. Then you'll more than likely set up your next appt according to what procedure he needs to do first. Now I've had a few cracks in my teeth and what my Dentist has done was go in and file it done and fill the cracked area with a filling the same color as my tooth. It's not painfulll and doesn't take long depending on the crack and how deep. There are many things that could be going on with your teeth by the way you spoke. It'll all boil down to going to the appt and having them cleaned. Start there! There is no need to be scared of having anything done to your teeth when you don't know what all needs to be done in the first place. LOL You'll do fine and also there is a Credit Card available for Dentist offices and vets called carecredit.com if you need extra to pay for dental work you may not be able to afford at the time of service. Good luck with everything! You'll do fine!
