Pain after getting a cavity filled?!

Question: Pain after getting a cavity filled?
Since Saturday i have had a major tooth ache it was bearable at times and at other times not. I took all of the over the counter medicine i could possible think of, and none of them work. I got barely any sleep and immediately called my dentist yesterday morning. Got and appointment for today at noon. I got x-rays taken of my problematic tooth or area surrounding it, and the dentist had found a cavity underneath a filling that i had. Well the dentist said that it was very close to the nerves in which i might need a root canal. Well upon drilling and removing the old filling she just said that the tooth decay was all gone and had said that i filling could fix it right up (about 80% chance it would work) well i could not feel any pain as i was on Novocaine. Well i got the procedure done at about 1pm, and it is about 9pm, and i am i almost the same pain i was in before the procedure. As before same thing tylenol will not work, advil will not work, and its almost unbearable. She had told me that the tooth would be very sensitive for a while for cold and hot. Well right now as i write this im in some pain that i cant n figure out why? So my question is could this mean that i have to get a root canal done? or could it be that the pulp was so traumatized that it could cause this pain and possibly be better tomorrow after some time? It was a very deep cavity filled? Should i be worried or should i just wait it out and see what happens tomorrow?

Answers:

That is normal. Your tooth was already irritated and hurting when you went in. Now that the numbness has worn off you are feeling the effects of working on your tooth. Take 4 ibuprofen every 6 hrs. for a few days. That should give it time for it to calm down and the ibuprofen will help with the irritation. Also, if that doesn't help, call the dentist and have them check your bite. When you are numb you can't always bite correctly. just a mm of your bite being off from what it was before can cause inflammation. Sometimes it takes 2-3 or more times for your bite to be adjusted for it to start feeling better. Also, have them check your bite while you are sitting up. My bite changes drastically when i'm sitting up vs. laying down in the chair. Trust me, your bite being off just a tad will cause a horrible toothache. If your bite is not hitting hard and your still having issues, it is quite possible that the cavity was too deep to treat with a filling and then a root canal would be the next option for treatment.

It is quite possible that because the cavity was so close to the nerve that it was traumatized, as you said. It can take a little while to settle down. If it doesn't ,then you might need a root canal. But try to give it some time. Maybe you can take something stronger for the pain. Ask your dentist if it's not better soon.
