If the natural color of teeth is yellow, why do we strive for pearly whites?!

Question: If the natural color of teeth is yellow, why do we strive for pearly whites?
Does anyone know the history of pursuing perfectly white teeth? Obviously, the cave men or Adam and Eve (or whoever you prefer!) didn't have whitening kits. So why do we try to get rid of the natural coloring?

natural colour of teeth varies from human to human.
most of the shades are of white colour.
tooth shade depends on skin also.
a fair guy and dark coloured guy may have same tooth shade but due to skin colour the teeth surrounded by dark skin will appear more bright.
just keep your teeth clean for better oral hygiene.

hey our natural tooth color is white.everybody that answered is wrong. but there IS this layer beneath the enamel(the white part) called dentin, which has more of a yellow look to it.its like a shield, just like the enamel over the pulp tissue within our tooth or also refereed to as the nerves..so people with age have yellow looking tooth because over the years our tooth enamel wears down causing a transparent like shield over our dentin, which is within the enamel, and gives off a yellow look.

yellow teeth look damaged and sometimes rotten,
white teeth look strong, and young people have naturally whiter teeth than old people do since they're not as used.. so it overall makes us look healthier

bc it looks cleaner

Same reason we tan, starve ourselves, spend money on things we can't afford...

IDK it is mostly just a U.S. phenomenon.
