Orthodontist Advise on Invisalign.?!

Question: Orthodontist Advise on Invisalign.?
Although I am in my early 20's I have ZERO problem looking silly with normal braces. I was always under the impression that they were the right way to do it. Invisalign seemed so limited and it's only benefit is that it makes your smile more aesthetically pleasing. I walked into the orthodontist office totally okay with metal and then the doctor surprised me.

APPARENTLY I would benefit from using Invisalign. According to this doctor metal braces tend to move teeth in undesirable ways. Let me clarify, when one tooth is moved the desirable way the teeth closes to it feel forces in the other directions. Logically this makes sense if you refer to Newtons 3rd law. Since the metal that moves the teeth is attached to the teeth it seems possible. While with Invisalign the plastic itself will push each individual tooth in place and keep others in place. While conventional braces may be useful for vertical movement it was not necessary for my teeth. The only teeth I need to worry about is the eight in the very front. He didn't want to mess with my bite do to the fact it was in good shape (keep back teeth in place with Invisalign).

It seems to be a very plausible argument. They are about the same price as typical braces so it doesn't seem to be for the money and he is a specialist, but it is difficult for me to accept this idea.

Can anyone confirm this for me? Any discussion will be greatly appreciated!!

Your orthodontist is telling you the right thing when he says that braces may move the teeth into undesirable positions. This is because, as accurately as the braces are placed, they will still never be placed into locations where the teeth will incur no net movement. There is the old mantra of "if it isn't broke, don't fix it".

With Invisalign, it isn't so much that the plastic holds the other teeth in place. Rather the doctor has digital control over which teeth will move, and which will not, as the treatment is computer generated. Therefore, in situations where the bite is good, and we are looking for alignment of anterior teeth only, Invisalign is a great choice when planned correctly.

Keep in mind that Invisalign lab fees/material costs are greater than for braces, so if the doctor is offering you both at approximately the same cost, it is definitely not for financial gain.

Hope this helps!

I travel nationally to teach dentists and orthodontists how to use Invisalign for Align Technology.

I think if I was you I would get a second opinion as every ortho I have seen has told me that traditional braces would always be best. Invisalign does move your other teeth to fit a tooth in. I have overcrowding and I have noticed that there is more space now that I'm getting closer to actually having that tooth go back in. I didn't have any teeth pulled so that must mean that my other teeth have shifted. Also, I got Invislaign for my bottom while I have it on the top because you bite does change with it. I was looking at pictures where I could see my teeth and my overbite has been getting better and I'm only wearing the trays, no elastics or anything. I never use to be able to see my bottom teeth when I smiled and now I can see them a little bit. I'm also 20 and that is why I went with Invisalign because I didn't want to have braces in college.
