Buttons on my braces?!

Question: Buttons on my braces?
I've searched through the questions and people keep referring to brackets as buttons. But i'm talking about the sharp little posts they attached to the back of my teeth. I've only had my braces for a couple months, but I'm wondering if the buttons stay on the entire treatment. They put them on to keep my tongue back but I'm curious as so how long they'll be on. They're pretty sharp, I have four of them on the back of my four front teeth on top.
Thanks

The prongs you have on the backsides of your upper front teeth are there to stop your tongue thrust problem. You probably have what is called an abnormal swallowing problem where the tongue pushes forward against the backs of the front teeth whenever you swallow. If left untreated this will cause your front teeth to slant way and make your teeth look really "bucky." More than likely the prongs will remain in place throughout your entire treatment to make sure that the tongue is properly trained to stay back when you swallow. BTW, they are supposed to be sharp to remind the tongue to stay away from your front teeth.
