A root canal itself does NOT hurt at all! The only part thats hurts for like 1 second is the shot of novacane they give u... TRUST ME i have low pain tolerance so if it didnt hurt for me.. IT DEFINATLY wont hurt for u :P

It wasn't bad for me at all. It takes a long time but you won't feel anything. They drill the hole first then use little metal files to clean out the canals. They also do a couple of x-rays during the process. The cleaning out part takes a long time. I didn't really have any pain afterwards until a couple days later, and I just took ibuprofen for that. I was also given antibiotics to make sure the infection was gone.
Experience
mine was painful, but that's because my dentist had a hard time numbing me. I've heard from other peeps that its relatively painless.
