I'm getting braces soon, and I was wondering...

1.Does it hurt when they are putting them on?
2.Does it hurt after they put them on.?
3.Will I cut my lip?

Answer any of these questionss, PLEASE! <3

Answers:

1. You will feel a lot of pressure and I think the molar caps they put in the back hurt the most.
2. Yes. You might wanna stock up on Tylenol, Soup, Apple sauce and wax. It goes away after 3-5 days depending on how messed up your teeth are ( they need to move and adjust a lot more!)
3. More like the inside of your mouth. You will probably get some canker sores so also get medication (its like a brown liquid thing called Zilactin-B) It really works, I use it all the time.

Although this will probably hurt alot and you will....to be honest miserable . It is COMPLETELY worth it. You will see drastic changes in the next 3-4 months and remember when they give you elastics...WEAR THEM! You can even double or triple them up thats what i did and i am getting mine off soon. Watch videos on youtube people say, "it was the most miserable time of my life but, IT was the best investment that my parents ever made!" Make sure to brush your teeth ALOT or else you will end up with stains on your teeth and you will regret that. Try not to break them you will have your braces on for even longer time and always remember to listen to what the ortho tells you to do, they are just trying to help you get an amazing smile :)

4 years of braces, pallet expander and retainer.

1. No, it doesn't hurt putting them on. The Orthodontist will glue the brackets to your teeth and attach the wire to the brackets (this is totally painless).

2. Initially it won't be painful, but over the next few days you may begin to experience some discomfort as the wire will start to move the teeth. This is a slow and gradual process, in about a week or so depending on how tight the braces are it might be a bit sore chewing on hard foods, but don't worry, this is totally normal and goes away once your teeth are used to the pressure of the braces, soon that discomfort will subside, and in the meanwhile you can take normal pain relief medication like paracetamol to relieve the pain.

3. You'll only cut your lip if you're not careful with your braces. If something knocks your face you're more likely to cut your lip because of the metal brackets attached to your teeth, but they shouldn't cut your lip for no reason. There are ways of reducing the irritation caused by the brackets by molding wax around the areas that are sharp

Hope this helps. Don't worry, braces aren't that bad, almost everyone has/had them and they'll be out before you know it. :)

I had braces, and am a final year dental student.

No it does not hurt when they are putting the braces on. Yes it will hurt after about 2 hours of having them on. and for about a week after that. also it will hurt for about a week after your first few tightenings. but it all goes away with time and tylenol(be careful not to over does though). and yes you may cut you lip during sports or physical activities. but it heals up really fast. and i have had my braces on since may 2010 and i am in basketball and i have only cut it about twice.

I had braces back in grade five and had them out in grade eight, I am grade twelve now

I do not think they hurt when they put them on, as they are only putting some sort of glue on surface of front teeth (all teeth I mean); the only pain there would probably the soreness from keeping your mouth open...
to be honest, they will feel tight after they put them on because your teeth are not used to the pressure they put when putting on the braces. What I mean is, they tighten the wires of the braces is what the pain could come from. This pain will make it harder to eat sortof because your teeth will hurt a bit from all the pressure of the wires thing... And yes, you could cut your lip if you are not careful; I got my lip cut a couple of times because I got hit in mouth from outside and the gum of lower lip hit brace which got cut.

This is how I experienced braces, I do not mean to scare you or anything... I was not allowed to eat hard food (unless cut into smaller pieces) and could not eat chewy food like gum :( But in the end, it was worth it, my teeth are all straight now :) but when they took them off, they had to "pry" them off I guess, like, I dont really know how to explain it. The brace (metal) is stuck on tooth, so they do something to it then when they pull (sortof..) it makes a pop sound kindof, and a little pain, but its bareable. Taking care of the braces can be a lot of work too; I have to wear retainer every night for life else there is chance for teeth to shift back :S

Anyways, best of luck; braces may be expensive and takes time to take care and all, but in the end, it will be worth it :)

experience (or I had braces before)

I just got braces yesterday. They did not hurt while they put them on. There are no needles or anything involved.

They are very sore after they are put on. I have been told that this lasts up to a week.

No, you won't cut your lip.

1.) No
2.) YES! They will be tightening your teeth up so they'll be sore. Take advil! They'll be sore after every visit because they'll be tightening them. They'll also feel a little loose.
3.) I never did and I played trumpet for 2 years with them.

I just got mine on two days ago and its just irritating not painful. You'll prolly have sores on your lips so wax will become your best friend :D
