Had a filling and it's been painful?!

Question: Had a filling and it's been painful?
so I had to go a few days with the pain until I could get into the dentist. Today he drilled down the filling and the pain went away, but I still can't eat on that tooth and cold drink sends a painful sensation through it. Is it because it was so sore and it's got to heal or does it need more work?

Answers:

Sensitivity is quite common after receiving a filling- especially if the decay had speed deep within the tooth. It will subside in a day or two; in the meantime, you can take an OTC painkiller such as Advil or Motrin. Gently swishing warm, salt water can sometimes help alleviate pain.

If your pain/sensitivity does not subside within 3-4 days, check back with your dentist: it could be that the filling is sitting too high or needs adjustment, or it could just be extra sensitivity, in which case he/she might prescribe an NSAID like Toradol until the pain subsides.

It's not unusual for a tooth to be sensitive as you describe after getting a filling. Try taking some Ibuprofen (400 or 600 mg every 8 hours, with food in your stomach) for a few days until it settles down. If it's still sensitive after a week, call your dentist and let him/her know.

Did you get a white filling?

I got a few of those a while back. They gave me nothing but trouble. Now I have switched to the silver fillings, and I can finally chew again.

I'm only getting the silver fillings from now!
