Space between teeth after cleaning?!

Question: Space between teeth after cleaning?
I went for a routine cleaning today and was told everything was fine. I was told that I have very healthy gums as well... When I got home and looked in the mirror I noticed that there is now a gap between my two middle bottom teeth and my gums. My teeth meet at the top but then 'spread' out. I'm not sure what to think of this- I know periodontal disease can be the cause but again, my gums were healthy, had absolutely no pockets over 3mm... What could be the cause of this? Is there anything that can be done?

Answers:

You could have some slight recession from the interdentinal papilla (which is the part of the gums that fills the space between teeth). This is almost inevitable with time. You probably have a very healthy mouth with some slight recession. You probably didn't notice the space before because it was filled with calculus that was removed during cleaning.

Slight recession actually decreases the depth of your pockets to only 1 or 2 mm. Disease will increase the pocket depth, which creates a nice home for bacteria to cause more periodontal disease.
