I need some answers to my jaw?!
Question: I need some answers to my jaw?
So all I'm really asking is...
What is it?
What can I do to get rid of it?
Should I be concerned?
Answers:
You have a temporomandibular joint disorder (aka TMJ) and the clicking you hear is due to dislocation of a structure that is part of the jaw joint called the articular disk whenever your teeth come together and then going back into joint when you open. The articular disk enables your mouth to open wider than 3 fingers and when it becomes dislocated and cannot pop back into place, the jaw feels like it gets "stuck" until it manages to go back into joint. TMJ never gets better, always gets worse over time, and never goes away until it is fixed. What you have now is called reciprocal clicking and in time the jaw will worsen to intermittent locking. Eventually the jaw will get to the point where you will not be able to open more than 3 fingers wide and this is called a closed lock without reduction. This is not the same as lockjaw. Lockjaw is a medical condition caused by tetanus. A TMJ closed lock means that the articular disk is not able to pop back into place so that the mouth opening is restricted to 3 fingers or less but the mouth can still open. You need to find a dentist who knows how to treat TMJ (not all do) but avoid oral surgeons and traditional orthodontists, trust me. The most common causes are bad bites, retruded chins (Class II jaws), history of head trauma, and traditional orthodontic treatment involving bicuspid (aka premolar) extractions. There is nothing that you can do to get rid of your problem. You will need to have a dentist treat you and the first thing that will be done is to have a special fitted mouthguard called a splint made for you to wear 24/7 to prevent the disk from dislocating. Yes, you should be concerned. Google TMJ disorders to find out more about it.
functional orthodontist; treated TMJ since 1984
It's not lockjaw. You probably haveTMJ. See a dentist to make sure it's mild. It is very common, no worries.
