Its a very good question. If you don't eat sticky carbohydrates, eat good amount of salad, brush your teeth with proper technique, use mouthwash regularly then there should not be any question of flossing your teeth unless until there is nothing stuck up between the proximal areas of teeth or gums. There are people who never saw a floss in their life and have strong teeth in their 70s. Sometimes the more you keep yourself clean, the more susceptible you become to infection. A little of normal flora should remain on your teeth so that more pathogenic bacteria doesn't attack your teeth.

Due to advancements in dentistry there is a rule of flossing your teeth but if done with proper technique. Brushing and flossing needs proper technique otherwise it may cause damage to hard or soft tissues in your mouth. That may be a good thing but not always.

Brushing does not 100% clean out stuff from between the teeth.
Brushing cannot get 100% underneath your gums.

Even brushing+ flossing+ mouthwash does not 100% remove the stuff from your teeth. But if you brush right after a meal, you will remove 100% of the stuff if you do Br+Fl+M.W.

See a Doctor every 6 mos to have your teeth profesionally cleaned.

flossing hurts your gums because you are not used to it. If you flossed every day it would not hurt and it would not bleed, because it turn into calased skin.
You need to floss every day because brushing DOES NOT do the job.
Food gets caught in between your teeth and rots. Plaque builds up inbetween your teeth as well...
If you dont want to floss then be prepared for alot of painful dentist appointments in your future.

Trust me brushing does the job. I brush, floss and use mouthwash. Flossing helps get rid of plaque between the teeth where toothbrushes can't get to very easily.
