Help!! Swollen jaw from wisdom teeth?!

Question: Help!! Swollen jaw from wisdom teeth?
Hey guys..about 5-6 months ago i thought my wisdom teeth were starting to come in because i started to get pains in the back of my mouth...the pains went away after a few months but my jaw started to swell and now it's definitely swollen. It looks like i have a lump coming off the left side, the right isn't as bad but still hurts. At first I thought my jaw just got bigger but now I think my wisdom teeth need to get pulled.

Is this normal? When your wisdom teeth hurt and need to get pulled does your jaw swell up? I am going to the dentist today because the pain is getting annoying..please help?

it sounds like an abscess which is basically an infection. the dentist will likely perscribe you antibiotics and tell you to get them pulled ASAP

hi im a dentis. this sounds like pericoronitis with a swelling. the options will be to take some antibiotics and then also to incise the abscess inside the mouth. this will drain off the pus. the dentist will tell you if there is pus there or not. in a significant case if there is any difficulty in swalloing then it is an emergency for which you should seek hospital medical attention and then you might need an instant general anaethetic and a sugical extroral drain with iv antibiotics. the guidelines from NICE on wisdom teeth suggest that two bouts of significant infection should alert you to the possibility of needing extractions.
gud luck!

im a dentist

Yes, I'd say that's a very clear sign that you need to have them pulled. Only a small percentage of people in the world have enough room in their mouths for wisdom teeth. The rest have to have them removed. You may still have some swelling for a few days after the procedure, but it will be a big relief after that.
