Why do I shake at the Dentist?!

Question: Why do I shake at the Dentist?
This is just incredibly annoying..

The last few times I've been to the dentist, my legs have just gone. They shake so much that it makes the overhead light wobble! (Which, quite frankly is embarrassing).

I'm not scared of the dentist. I've not been given injections to make me scared. One thing that works for about a minute is if I arch my back a bit - which probably makes the dentist himself wonder what the flip I'm doing!!
When I shake, the dentist thinks I'm frightened and keeps reassuring me all of the time which makes me think "Oh for flip sake! I'm fine, really.. my legs are just not connected to my brain argh"

It makes my appointment a bit shorter because he thinks I'm nervous - when really I'm fine!
So if anybody has any handy hints and tips on how to not-shake I'd be entirely grateful, I'm due back in 2 weeks oh dear...!

Well, just to list a few things off the top of my head..

Jumpy leg-- When your leg just has to shake and you can't stop it.. I get that sometimes. But since you only get it at the dentist, this probably isn't it.

Mind. You could have been shaking one dentist appointment and just keep thinking "it'll happen again". Doesn't help that you're at the dentist where you can't stop thinking about it! Try to distract yourself from it.

You might need sugar. For high blood pressure etc. Also, do you have enough food before you go? No skipping breakfast to get there, or anything.

Also, is the dentist's office cold? Because that might be it, as well.

Edit: Forgot one.. Nerves. You're not nervous about the pain, I can see that. How about how long this is taking? How annoying the dentist is? These can also affect your nerves.

HI
Its pretty common, dentists are used to it ( they don't enjoy it either) concentrate on breathing, long steady breaths, ask the dentist for some happy gas to get started, and think of other things, maybe take some music to listen to, look at the ceiling look for cracks, be brave.

When you shake all you are doing is being nervous. You shouldn't be nervous when you go to the dentist because even if they do do surguery or drill your tooth you can't feel it because the dentist gives you numming medicine.

If you can afford it, you should discuss this with a therapist.

If not, talk to your guidance counselor.

A professional might have read something about this condition.

Hi me,

Good question and I have had something similar happen to me. I am not the best dental patient and I used to lose sleep the night before as I was so scared and petrified due to an extremely horrendous experience when I was younger.

But no more as I have a very sympathetic dentist who explains everything to me so that i know what is going on and he uses the least invasive procedure as a matter of course.

You need to overcome your fear from past experience to get the treatment you need as pain, worry and loss of sleep must be overcome.

Get the Free Fear report as that helped me and my friends .

All the best, Keep smiling.
