Can braces fix "popping" of the jaw?!

Question: Can braces fix "popping" of the jaw?
:/

Answers:

Braces alone usually cannot stop popping of the jaws, which is due to dislocation of the articular disk within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The articular disk must be stabilized by repositioning the condyles in order to stop the disk from dislocating and this is usually done with a functional appliance. This is also the reason why traditional orthodontists are unable to or do not know how to treat TMJ disorders because almost all do not know functional orthodontic techniques. Clicking and popping of the jaws is almost always a sign that the mandible (lower jaw) is too far back and this causes anterior displacement of the articular disk whenever the teeth are together. So in order to keep the disk in place, the lower jaw must be brought down and forward and this can only be done with functional orthodontics.

functional orthodontist; treated TMJ since 1984

Sometimes you might also need upper or lower jaw surgery, so that the two jaws match up.Oral surgeon/mds do that in a hospital setting.

only in certain cases.
