will my teeth move backwards if I have a back tooth extracted?!

Question: Will my teeth move backwards if I have a back tooth extracted?
Hi

If I have my top back tooth extracted, will my teeth shift backwards? I already have gappy teeth at the front, I don't want them to be made worse!! Someone told me teeth only shift forwards, it this right?

Thanks!!

they may shift abit but i doubt you notice it

First of all, teeth move in any direction possible-sideways, in, out, back and forth. If you remove a tooth that's located between two teeth, those teeth tend to fill up that space(same thing if you remove a tooth from the mandible, and the one on your upper jaw, the maxilla, remains without an antagonist-it will move downwards to fill the gap<descending with or without the bone-usually along with it>).If the tooth you are extracting is the third molar(the last one), your teeth will not migrate backwards. If it is your third molar(wisdom tooth), choose a good doctor, a lot of accidents can happen while extracting that particular tooth. Moreover, if it is your wisdom tooth(i keep saying if, because you did not mention that), where I am from they don't do endodontic treatments(root canals) on them, unless they are used as an abutment(i think this is the English word for it) for a prosthesis.one more thing: if you pull your top one out and the bottom one doesn't come in contact with anything, that one might migrate.if your wisdom tooth hasn't yet erupted and you are pulling out your second molar(the one in front of the wisdom tooth), when it will erupt you'll probably have difficulties with it.hope this helps.cheers!

No ,teeth will not move backwards after the extraction

After an extraction of a back tooth the tooth behind the gap may move forwards somewhat to close the resultant gap , but the teeth in front of the gap will not move backwards. The forward movement depends on your age. the younger the age the more movement ie under 20 year old one usually gets a fair amt of forward movement

Sarah is certainly right they won't move as they are in a set place in you jaw on the bone structure . Having the back ones removed will avoid pain brought on by them being pushed together . It is strange how the human body get almost everything right but those pesky back one hope it gets sorted :-)

No they won't move backwards. Having your back teeth removed helps to prevent your teeth from being forced together, which can become very painful.
