Fractured tooth root? Help!?!

Question: Fractured tooth root? Help!?
About 7 months ago I face planted the floor and broke my two front teeth. I had a root canal done and had them capped etc and it was all fine. My left tooth however felt tinsy winsy tiny slightly sensitive when i touched it so i asked the dentist about it and after a few more x-rays he said the tooth root was fractured and would have to be extracted.

Another dentist however (who i trust slightly more, he's got his own practice in Chelsea and is generally well regarded) said i would not need it extracted, the only reason it would be extracted is to avoid infection and he said that if it's not infected it shouldn't be taken out - don't fix it if it aint broke.

I'm just slightly worried now that if i leave it in the root may get worse and then should i need it extracted i won't be able to get an implant cos the bone will be damaged? I'm only 17 and very very scared and upset about the whole situation to be honest and i'm scared to go to the dentist cos i don't want people poking about with it and making it worse as obviously the last thing i want is for it to be taken out!!!!!!

If any of you know anything in this field or have any advice please help :(

If in fact you do have a root fracture, you need to have the tooth extracted. You should have an implant placed in its spot if you are healthy enough for it.
Sorry for the bad news, but a root fracture will not heal on its own

I am a dentist

As someone who's had a cracked tooth, bacteria will get in there no matter what you do. You should get it fixed now, while it's cheaper, rather than go through the whole implant procedure. By the way, they put some stuff in the hole where your tooth was to grow new bone, so don't worry about that part.

Use your insurance if you have it and deal with it while you can.

Sometimes unfortunately getting to the dentist falls below keeping a roof over the head -- go figure.

Does it pulse and throb or are you through that part? (either is no good)

I fractured on and it eventually had to come out.

But if it is only a tiny bit sensitive as you describe it would be possible just to leave it be to see what happens a little bit later on as the second dentist has suggested.
At the moment you can live with the slight discomfort and you may even get used to it.
He is sensibly saying leave it for now and it is a good sensible approach to simply wait and see.

Bone grafts can cover the gaps needed for an implant and a small partial plate can be worn in the meantime. But a good implantologist can (with pre planning time and not in an emergency situation) extract that tooth and put an implant straight in. I am waiting to do that with a problem tooth close to the front now,
