Hate to break it to you, but it's possible your dentist might have used too much novocain. Either that or s/he thought that the procedure would be very painful for you & decided to err on the side of caution by giving you a stronger dose.
Of course, it's also possible that you just have a different reaction to the drug than most other people. Sometimes medication can take longer to get out of a person's system based on things like their height and weight or when they last ate prior to receiving the dosage.
If you're still experiencing severe numbness six to eight hours after the procedure, you might want to call your dentist to express your concerns.
