Wisdom teeth help!!!?!

Question: Wisdom teeth help!!!?
Just got back from the dentist, and he told me ive got my four wisdom teeth coming in, the bottom two have about half the space they need, so he has to take them out soon he said, so hes got to cut my gums, cut the tooth in half, and take both pieces out.
He wants to do it in the summer, so i wont miss any school..
So, all im wondering is, have you gotten it done this way?
If you have or even haven't, how bad did it hurt to just get them out?
What kinda things did you eat?
How long was it painful for?
Any other details i should know?

Sorry for the mass amount of questions, im just kinda nervous
Also! will it be worse do you think since my teeth hurt so bad it hurts to eat, just after getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist?

Answers:

I got all four of my wisdom teeth removed yesterday and I have good news for you: it isnt always as bad as people make it sound :)

during the procedure, i put my mp3 in so that i didnt have to focus on what was going on in my mouth and because i was under anaesthesia it was even easier to let my mind wander. Also, the anaesthesia may make you feel light-headed immediately after, so make sure that you've arranged for someone to pick you up.

the dentist will make sure EVERYTHING is numb before they start extracting your teeth, so you shouldnt worry about feeling the actual extraction during the procedure.

i'll admit that the first day is pretty tough, but if you follow the instructions that the dentist gives you (you can always ask for a written copy, though one should be provided anyway) the pain will be bearable. Remember to take any prescribed pain meds and antibiotics for the allotted time and use a cold pack alternating on and off for about twenty minute periods to help the pain and swelling.

All cases vary, but as for myself, after 48 hours, i feel next to no pain, talking is not too uncomfortable and the swelling is almost completely nonexistent. do not be alarmed if you find some bruising on your jaw or if swelling lasts longer: its perfectly normal for it to last up to 4 days.

As for the gauze they put over the sutures, follow their instructions on how long to leave it in and when to change it. Changing too frequently can slow the formation of blood clots which help the area of extraction to heal.

And you can expect to be on a liquid diet for a few days after the extraction. I hear stories about people eating burgers the next day, but probably only had extraction(s) on one side of their jaw and used the other side to chew. In your case, i would not risk pulling a stitch out by eating solid food so soon. Lukewarm soups, smoothies, puddings, mousses, jello, and protein drinks are an advisable diet until the stitches have dissolved/been removed. You can try eating things like couscous and soft rice or soft fruits and soft steamed veggies a few days to a week after the procedure.

Also, its important to not neglect dental hygiene during the healing process, so be sure to drink water after you eat and you can start rinsing you mouth with salty water every few hours for the next two weeks but no earlier than 24 hours after the procedure (you arent to spit or suck on anything including straws until the stitches come out really because to do so would also slow clot formation which can lead to a painful condition known as dry socket). you can start carefully brushing your teeth with a SOFT brush the second day after the procedure.

So basically, follow the dentist's orders, rest up and try not to be nervous :) tooth removal is not a fun process but its worth it in the end! and remember, these are professionals who are working to help you, so feel free to ask them any questions that you are worried about!

Take care and sorry for the long-winded answer :)
