Tooth with prior root canal broke off?!

Question: Tooth with prior root canal broke off?
Hi, I had a root canal several years ago in the tooth upper left behind the eye tooth. Never a problem. Two dentists said it was well sealed and filled and a crown was optional.

Just now, the entire front surface of the tooth fell off. No pain (I guess I wouldn't expect it as it has been root canaled) but it's very rough, unattractive and obviously needs attending to.

What can I expect from the dentist? I will be calling first thing Monday morning. I am a nervous Nellie when it comes to dentistry and of course there is the expense, etc.

Is it probably safe to eat on, for now? Obviously nothing too taxing--won't be dipping into the Candied apples, etc...but my fear would be it would snap off all together.

Trying to adjust my expectations, thanks very much for any insight you can offer.

Answers:

When a nerve is removed from the tooth there is no blood feeding the tooth tissue. After time because of this the tooth becomes weak. That is why a tooth has to be crowned after root canal treatment to create strength.
I would see you dentist as the tooth can cut your tongue and look bad.

the sooner you get it fixed the less it will hurt, and the easier it will be for the DMD to fix. Is there a 24 hr place in your town? You may wake up tonight in agony.
