I had them for 9 years. They suck at first, but you get used to them.

This is your first stage, so you'll probably only be getting the top row of your teeth done this time, but everyone and every doctor is different so you may be getting the bottom as well. They do they same thing for the bottom and the top, but I'll just assume you're only getting the top at first like I did.

Basically, they take two metal "rings" and place them on your very back 2 teeth. These are basically where the wire for your braces is held in place. They can be the worst to get put in when you first get them, because they fit all the way over the tooth, which means a lot of the time they will have to be pushed into the gum a little. It hurts, but usually they allow you to bite a little stick to get them into place and it's not horrible pain or anything, so you'll be fine.

After that's over, your ortho will do the easy part. That's where they use a thing to keep your mouth open and you get to relax while some people cement the individual braces to each of your teeth. You don't feel anything, but it can be a little awkward. A lot of times they put things in your mouth to keep your tongue in place and stuff, but really it's the easiest part of getting them on. You'll then lay there for a little bit while the glue fully dries. Then, you'll be allowed to go rinse out all the cement taste, because the cement is really strong and has a kind of metal taste.

Then, you'll come back and they'll probably ask you to pick a color or two. Pick something you like, but also something that goes with an entire month. For example, if you wear a lot of things that clash with bright pink, don't pick bright pink. And, it's best to get holiday colors if you're getting the bands at least two weeks before the holiday (don't get orange and black if halloween is the day after you're appointment, because you'll be stuck with black and orange for a whole month after it's over).

Then comes the wire, which is how they tighten your braces. The colored bands keep the wire in place against the brackets. They're like tiny little rubber bands. When the wire is in place, the ortho will tighten the wire so that pressure is applied to your teeth. This is what causes them to move.

After you're wire has been tightened, you can go. You'll probably receive instructions of which foods you can't eat (Basically, anything chewy or hard), and they'll show you how to floss around the wires and such.

The worst part of first getting your braces is the time after the appointment. For a few days to a week you're teeth and jaw will be VERY sore. You probably won't be able to bite down without being in pain and even talking or touching your tongue to your teeth will hurt. I walked around with a funny face for my first 3 days with braces cause I couldn't close my mouth all the way because my teeth hurt to bad, and I often sat at home holding my lips off of them. You'll want to invest in some really soft foods: mac n cheese, jello, apple sauce, anything you can drink like a smoothy or shake, etc. Also, motron or other muscle relaxing meds can help as well.

After you get through that though, that's pretty much it. Every month you'll go back into the ortho's office. He or she will check out your teeth, and then they will remove the wire, ask you to pick new colors, and replace it with a new tighter or thicker wire. It does not hurt as much after each appointment as time goes on. You'll find it'll only be slightly irritating after a few months the first few days after an appointment instead of super pain.

You may also receive other hardware throughout your time with your braces as well (I know, the fun just keeps on coming XP) Your ortho may want you to wear headgear (a head fitting device that is worn while you sleep to provide a tighter adjustment amount) or bands (basically, small rubber bands that fit on one or each side of the mouth from bottom to top bracket. You will only wear bands if you have both top and bottom braces, and the bands are removed for eating, but can make talking hard work, literally. They're like exercise bands for your jaw)

In general, orthos will often have you wear your top braces for a year or two, remove them and give you a retainer for a year. Then, they will put the top braces back on or simply add the bottom row (some orthos don't remove the top row before adding the bottom). Then, you will wear both top and bottom for a year or two, after which you will receive a retainer and permanent metal retainers which are permanently fitted to the back or the first four teeth on your upper and lower front of your jaw. You are expected to wear the retainer either for 7-12 hours during the day or at night everyday for the rest of your life to retain the shape of your teeth.

Hope this helps, good luck with the braces (don't worry, it's not that bad)

I had braces for two years. They can hurt, I mean remember they are being put on your teeth to move them, make them straight. I would not say it hurts a lot for me it gave me headaches, a little Advil and I was fine. They only hurt me when I got them tightened every so often, every month or six weeks, and only for a day or two after. It takes a while it took about 1h30 mins for them to put mine on and adjust them for the first time. After that an adjustment takes like 10-20 mins max. I used purple and pink a lot. One time i had a different color on every tooth which was also cool. At eating and drinking is weird, feels like your teeth are gonna fall out, they feel loose, same thing when you get them off. The hardest part for me was no gum and caramel. Breaking a brace off really really hurt i did it on candy at Halloween. You have to brush and floss a lot more, because food gets stuck easy. If after they give you a retainer wear it I didn't and one of my teeth moved back to how it was before. Basically follow all instructions, it may be hard but remember its not forever, and wear them proud just think of the perfect or better smile you will have after!

I had braces for 13 months and 15 days, because I had Sure Smile wires. I didn't get to have colors at all but that meant I would have to wear my braces really long. Most likely you'll get both top and bottom at the same time. I couldn't eat solid food for a week after I got them on so I invested in some fruit smoothie packs from the local store and that saved my life. lol. After the first week it is smooth sailing. Don't eat waffles from school though they break hardware so easly. After a month you won't even know they are there. It is worth it all. I get complements daily on how amazing my teeth look now and it has given me confidance. I think getting braces is cool.

at first they feel strange but after a day or two you stop noticing them ,which colours (Australia)? what ever you like,i choose blue and white (cause Carlton (Auzzie Rules Football).

Bad Things:
have to go to orthodontist once a month
cant eat lollies and hard food

good luck!

Had Braces

Depends on your age and your threshold for pain. I got them at 26 and needed vicodin, it hurt SO bad, but kids don't usually have bad pain.
