the best is bought at a dental office. Over the counter I would go with a well recognized company like crest. Also check the label and go with the one with the highest amount of Carbomide peroxide.

Arm & Hammer Extra Whitening Brilliant Sparkle Toothpaste, £1.99l (large supermarkets and most chemists)

Arm & Hammer is well known for using baking soda in its products. They say this can clean away unsightly plaque and reduce deep tooth stains better than ordinary toothpastes.
This particular paste claims to whiten and brighten teeth safely, using low abrasive granules or micropolishers.

The Smile Place Teeth Whitening System, £99 plus P&P (www.the smileplace.co.uk)

A mail order professional and safe tooth-whitening system say the manufacturers.
Customers first receive the putty to make impressions of their teeth. The impressions are then returned to the Smile Place for bespoke dental trays to be made.
The dental trays are sent back with a carbamide peroxide-based whitening gel - there are three strengths available, chosen according to the sensitivity/ discolouration of your teeth.
You wear the trays filled with the gel for two hours daily until the required.

Philips Sonicare E9500 elite Sonic Toothbrush, aprox £129 (Boots and other major stores).

This claims to be the 'number one recommended sonic toothbrush by dental professionals worldwide'.With its patented cleaning action, which combines sound vibrations and a wide-sweeping brushing motion, dual brushing speed and two brush head sizes for dealing with different areas of the mouth, Philips says its new sonic electric toothbrush is clinically proven to significantly reduce coffee, tea and tobacco stains for naturally whiter teeth. It will also improve gum health and remove more plaque.

Brilliant Tooth Whitening System, seven-day starter kit, £4.98 (Tesco and other large stores)
From the leading U.S. manufacturer of tooth whitening systems, Brilliant offers 'tooth whitening results that are fast and gentle - even for the most sensitive teeth'.
It can apparently remove surface stains through 'a mild, yet effective oxidation process'.
After brushing teeth, fill the rubber mouth tray with whitening gel. Paint each tooth with 'accelerating' fluid, then place the filled delivery tray in the mouth, biting into it to hold it in place.
Leave in place for five to ten minutes. Remove the tray and brush teeth with water, then the enclosed whitening toothpaste.

Hope this helps !

Some of the products my friends and family have tried

you can't buy anything over the counter in the UK that actually does anything; tooth bleaching here is considered possibly harmful and is only done by dentists.

save your money, replace your toothbrush frequently, brush and floss and live with what you have. Teeth are not supposed to be bright white.

Crest whitening strips are amazing. My teeth went yellow from too much herbal tea (yuck) they brought them back up white quite nicely. You can purchase them on Amazon Uk, possibly in shops - not sure. They contain less bleach than dentists use, so I'd say they're safer than having your teeth professionally done. Crest also do a whitening toothpaste which is good, that is available in shops, and Arm & Hammer whitening toothpaste is good too.

Don't bother with a whitening toothpaste - they're ineffective (see video below).

Most products in the store are mildly effective at best but there are some good mail order kits you can get from companies in the UK if you want to get real results.
