Just broke off tooth. What are they going to do to me?!

Question: Just broke off tooth. What are they going to do to me?
It is the tooth next to my front tooth, the little pointy one. I can still feel bits of it in my upper gum. It did not hurt and it is not bleeding. What will the dentist do to me? What kind of help is there for a snapped off tooth? I am so scared.

Answers:

You can have a cap or a veneer put on. You won't even tell it from the real tooth. I have a couple of caps on my broken teeth.
It will cost a couple of hundred dollars though, depending on how big the break is.
Just reading the other answer. Did you break it below the gum? Then it will be a crown.

Your dentist will probably give you a crown. He grinds the remaining part of the tooth down to a little 'peg'. Then he takes an impression of your whole mouth. Then he will make a temporary tooth until the actual crown is made.

The crown is made of ceramic and gold. For front teeth, they use ceramic on the outside, and they can even match the color to your other teeth, so you can't tell it's a crown. For back teeth, they made them out of gold because it's not as hard and brittle, so it's better for chewing. The crown fits down over the little peg. It's glued in place. It feels just like a real tooth!

You might also need a root canal. This is usually done by a specialist your dentist sends you to. He drills down the center of the root and uses little files to scrape out the nerve of the tooth. After that the tooth is 'dead', so it won't rot from the inside out.

A crown and root canal are possible. But it might be as simple as gluing it back together. If gluing is used, just remember that this tooth is frail and you cannot chew anything on it again, except by accident.

They are going to put a cap on the tooth. It will feel odd for a couple of days but after it will look and feel the same as always.

My husband chipped his front tooth and that's what the dentist did to him.
