It depends on what is going on. Some people just need bars behind their teeth, so people need them in front and the entire width of the mouth.

Without insurance, braces are usually $5,000-8,000. Don't estimate what you may or may not need based on Google, friends' accounts, or non dental professionals.

If you have dental insurance coverage, get a dental professional opinion, and stop freaking out in the meantime. You really can't compare yourself to anyone else's teeth, anyway. We all have different teeth, bones, x-rays, and genetics.

bad teeth; have a 10 year old who needs a retainer and a bottom bar

You have to have brackets placed on the back teeth so they can act as anchors as you have the front teeth move. Remember that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Whatever force you apply to the front teeth to get them to move needs to be balanced out on other teeth. Since it takes much more force to move a back tooth, you use them as anchors.

Braces can cost anywhere from 3500 to over 9000 depending on what you need and how long you'll have to have them.

I am a dentist

It sounds to me that you haven't seen the orthodontist yet. Make sure your parents have you see at least 2 or 3 Orthodontists for opinions.
There are braces that do go behind your teeth but cost around $8000- $9000. These also take much longer to get used to, around a month or so!

"Regular braces" are around $4500-$5000.

You can get them on the back of your teeth, and hey cos around five thousand, without insurance, and with insurance, princes vary.
